Tom Brennan: Tuesday Mets Action

Pike's Peak, Colorado

Mets in Coors country:

Our lads, suffering from altitude sickness, lost 6-3 to a miserable Rockies team. I turned it off mid-game. Somebody please let me know how the Mets seem to lack the killer instinct to beat bad teams.

Let’s move on to the important stuff.

Delightful DSL Action:

The DSL Orange team was down 5-1 Tuesday, going into the bottom of the 9th with just a run on 4 hits, the same as the DSL Blue Mets team produced on Tuesday in their entire game.

But the Orange Squad wasn’t done. No sir. Not by no means.

A ninth inning lead off single, 5 walks, an error, a wild pitch, and a sac fly resulted in 5 runs and a 6-5 win, making up for their 4 errors.

Crisp and compelling.

One DSL player is hitting .399 with 36 steals in 41 games. Sorry, he is not a Met.

The Mets’ Edward Lantigua is #42 in the DSL at .298.

Yovanny Rodriguez, the Mets’ big international signing in early 2024, is #284 amongst DSL hitters at .180. Geometrically speaking, I prefer 360 to 180. Meanwhile, Vlady Guerrero is hitting .181.

The Dodgers’ two teams meanwhile have 66 HRs, versus the Mets’ 24. One Rockies team has 18 HRs but the other Rockies team has just 2 HRs in 46 games, and those 2 HRs are a mere 43 HRs fewer than one of LAD’s teams that has 45.

Minors Action:

Syracuse’s Tylor Megill may or may not wear tattoos but he got tattooed for two homers. In 5 innings, he allowed 4 runs with 85 pitches. He remains stretched out. And frankly puzzling, regardless of tattoo status.

Reid Garrett allowed a double and walk in his inning of work - but also fanned 3. That says “healthy” to me.

Brett Baty started at 2nd base, and he is hitting just .259.

 - He is just a .215 MLB hitter in over 500 at bats.

Pablo Reyes, his 30 year old AAA teammate, meanwhile is hitting .310.

 - He is a .248 MLB hitter in over 500 at bats.

Just food for thought.

Syracuse rallied to win 8-6.  Star hitter? DJ Stewart, naturally. 3 for 3 and a BB.  Acuna sat, but had a key, 2 run pinch hit double in the 8th. He pinch hit for scuffling JT Schwartz (.175).

Fujinami got the save with a hitless 9th, fanning 2, and walking 1.

But, living dangerously, as he often does, he threw 11 balls vs. just 8 strikes.

Eric Orze (4-0) got the win despite allowing 2 runs in his one inning of work.

Binghamton? They won, too, 6-4.

5’6” Wyatt Young was 4 for 4, and is hitting .269, by far the highest average of current Binghamton team members.

Next highest average is 5’6” Matt Rudick at .237.

Which made me think: when the heck is 5’6” Jett Williams coming back?

Joander Suarez (taller than 5’6”) had 9 Ks in 6.2 innings for the win. He is now 7-5. Like in 2023, he is pitching real tough in the second half.

Brooklyn?  They are getting the same rainy weather as Long Island (no cyclone, though), so their game was cancelled.

St Lucie (34-67), who lose as much as the Colorado Rockies, continued their losing ways with a 9-5 loss.

Their 7 hits and 7 walks were no match for their opponent's 7 hits and 9 walks.

Lucie fielders made 4 errors, too, including Houck's 21st, but Houck had a hit, 2 RBIs and 2 walks.  He has hit in 4 straight, but has a 38% K rate for the season, which (along with his high error rate), hints to me that he may start out again in St Lucie in 2025, absent a breakout rest of the season.

OK, now it's your turn, readers. What are your thoughts?

Young will start Syracuse next spring

I don't think they can put Megill back together anymore

Why don't they go trade for someone?

Oh.

I thought Megill was better than Mike Pelfrey. I am starting to think I have had that wrong. If Young is in AAA, he will return to where he exploded in April 2022, after being called all the way up from the FCL the year before, and rescued a completely comatose Syracuse offense. He had a .450 AAA OBP in April 2022, before being demoted to AA. Maybe they should have left Wyatt in AAA.

Appears Parada threw out two of six trying to steal. Nice job Kev.
It could be mental with Baty, I’m not scouting the stat line there.
I couldn’t understand why Mendoza didn’t have anyone warming up behind Young when he got into trouble.
Where is Jett Williams?
Severino didn’t back up again last night. Too bad Senga and Scott got hurt. Sevy was sure to be a goner last week. He did hit 99 last night.
Speaking of hitting, the Phillies are warming up so forget catching them, but the Braves are pretty cold themselves.
I realize the Mets weren’t supposed to be this good this year, so I’m glad for the chance to see a playoff chase, but this one dimensional aspect to them except for Lindor and Nimmo is disappointing. When they are on, they are on! When they aren’t, they are pathetic. That needs to change. Add speed and add contact. And please, add some production with RISP!

Gus, if Jett had stayed healthy all year, you’d have gotten Acuna and Jett in 2025 and Morabito in 2026. Speed galore. Mauricio might add some, too, but perhaps he will feel that stealing bases is too high risk now.

Once again a team lacking offense sits their hottest hitter in McNeil. 0

The injury report on Jett has been this since early June:

Williams underwent surgery on June 6. He is expected to miss 8-10 weeks.

- well…he’s at 9 weeks and counting. No sign of him.

Jett took soft swings in batting cage yesterday

Scheduled to return in Arizona League

So, basically, a lost season for Jett. I wonder how he injured it.

Tom,
Several years ago the Mets GM stated that he wanted to spread his DSL money on numerous players and not on a few. A "quantity" versus "quality" approach hoping to find a nugget among a large group of signings. Looks like that approach failed as witnessed in our current International players. Let's hope our current GM sees it differently. We are trending to sign a #1 DSL prospects in 2026 so we seem to be on the right approach.

D J, I believe Mack has something coming up on that topic shortly. But our DSL guys have been weak this year.

Both SP Douglas Orellana and SS Jett Williams placed on 60 day

They are both done

Vasil and Jarvis getting hammered today. I’d count on neither for 2025. They are sub-Houser.

I remember seeing Jett being interviewed at Citi a month ago or so and he said he was looking forward to next year so i guess that says it all. I just hope his career is alot better than our football team by the same name (almost). It just has to happen to us that were sellers in May then get back in the race so were buyers then of course start to fade and missed out on what could have been our best trade deadline moves ever because it was setup perfectly oh well.
