Tom Brennan: workin’ 9 to 5

LOSING 9 To 5 🏃‍➡️, WHAT A WAY TO CHASE A WILD CARD

Workin' nine to five, what a way to make a livin', Barely gettin' by…”

Lyrics from that classic Dolly Parton song.

Well, “the Mets lost 9-5, what a way to chase a Wild Card, they may just slide by…”

Down 7-1 after Jose Q (6-9, 4.57) got smacked around again as if he were Adrian Houser, the Mets rally in the late innings to pull to 7-5, before a circus-like play resulted in 2 runs. You can watch the play somewhere on video if you missed it. It wasn’t pretty.

The Quint has just 6 wins in 25 starts this season, and just 9 wins in 38 starts over the past two Mets seasons - and is 15-24 in total over his last 5 seasons, and making darned good dough over those 5 years to garner those 15 wins.

Baseball can be lucrative indeed. LUCRE FOR LOSERS.

Anyway, 6 wins in 25 starts leaves the rest of the team in Bachman Turner Overdrive mode, workin’ overtime.

While the Mets were workin’ at losing 9 to 5, it turns out only the top 4 hitters were working:

Line up spots 1 thru 4, Lindor, Vientos, Nimmo and Martinez, combined for 5 hits, 5 runs, and 5 RBIs. On a scale of 1 to 5, they get a 5.

The other 6 (Alonso, Winker, Bader (who pinch hit for Winker), Alvarez, McNeil, and Taylor) were 0 for 17, 3 walks and 7 Ks. Your odds of successfully achieving a Wild Card, when you hit like that, substantially exceed 9 to 5. How about 1,000,000 to 1?

Syracuse, meanwhile, won 3-2 on 3 solo HRs from its vets. Baty sat, Gilbert went hitless again to drop to .185 in 108 minors at bats this year. Which is OK, because he is still in spring training.

Hamel was OK, as he allowed 9 runners in his 5 innings, but just 2 runs, Orze fanned 3 of 4, AND DEDNIEL PITCHED A SCORELESS REHAB INNING!

And A Young got the win.

In Binghamton the unlucky Nolan McLean got his 1st AA win to improve to 1-8. He pitched masterfully, throwing 6 innings of 4 hit, one run ball, while walking none and fanning 5. For the full fine first season, he is 3.89….but 3-10.

Again, ignore starter win loss records, because if they are pulled before 5 innings, they can only lose, not win. 96 Ks in 90 innings, a solid 1.30 WHIP (considering most of his first season has been in AA), but he needs to cut down on his HBP (he’s nailed 13 this year, which in a sense may tell us a good thing: he is not afraid to pitch inside.)

Blistering hot Wyatt Young went 4 for 4, and is hitting .432 with a .536 OBP in 15 August games.  The unranked Young is doing his best Jett Williams imitation.

Brooklyn lost a 10-9 brawl. Morabito 2 hits, 2 walks, and the hot D’Andre Smith had 2 hits, including a HR, and 4 RBIs.

St Lucie lost 5-3, but Boston Baro (.286) had 3 hits and Carson Benge (.375) a hit and a walk.

Hope you have a better 9 to 5 today than the Mets did yesterday.

The Mets are fumbling, bumbling, and tumbling, and their recent slight lead in the Wild Card race is now a 2.5 game deficit.

They remind me of my Russian friend, Gnot Gudenov.

This is what happens when a team fools itself into thinking they were good enough to reach the post-season while ignoring reality.

Things are going exactly as expected.

Let's see how they do in the seven games against the Padres and D-Backs. Then we will know if they are related to Gudenov.
