Tom Brennan: Go West, Young Men, Go West

IF THE METS PLAY SAND DIEGO, MAYBE THEY ACTIVATE THIS GUY TO PINCH HIT
HE HAS A HISTORY OF TAPE MEASURE SHOTS IN SAN DIEGO'S PETCO PARK

So, the Mets will be headed west.

GO WEST, YOUNG MEN, GO WEST.

A dazzling 70-40 in their last 10, and with Senga and McNeil now back.

(Yes, McNeil will be ready - a southern California native, he wants this)

Ostensibly THE METS ARE THE BEST TEAM IN BASEBALL right now.

The Mets will be playing 1 of the 2 other best teams in baseball right now:

LAD or SDP.

It will be a war of equals.

A war the Mets will somehow win.

Then, the Mets will face off against the 4th best remaining team in the playoffs in the World Series:

The Yankees, who dispatched of the all-too-easy Royals, a team which was under .500 when not playing the White Sox.  Bronxites are 4th best.  The Mets over their last 110 contests have far outplayed the Yankees. The past will be prologue.

And the Yankees won't have Jeter.  But the Mets WILL have Lindor.

Atlanta looked invincible.  Then they weren't.

Some thought the Brewers would brandish their division title and walk over the Mets.  The Mets sent them back to the brewery.

Then the Phearful Phillies were not so fearful after all.

A long way for the Mets to go.

But a 2024 World Series crown looks very doable from where I sit.

After all, we've got....

Sean Manaea, who'd have 100 more career wins if he cut his hair sooner.

(My ace) David Peterson

Luis (Bulldog) Severino

Kodai (the Samurai) Senga

Jose (Whitey Ford) Quintana

Edwin (Sugar) Diaz

Francisco (MVP) Lindor

Mark (Galarraga II) Vientos

Pete (Not My Last Mets At Bat) Alonso

Brandon (Super Pest) Nimmo

Jose (OMG) Iglesias

Jesse (the Helmet Slammer) Winker

Tyrone (I Can Snag Anything) Taylor

Jeff (the Repaired Squirrel) McNeil

,,,,and a whole host of other "fight-fight-fighters" like Alvarez, Stanek, Butto, Garrett, Bader, and others.

Even struggling JD Martinez may experience a reboot, as he returns to the West Coast, where he hit well last season as a Dodger.

Time to start serving Royal Crown Cola in the clubhouse.

These guys, they love crowns.

This is what we have all looked forward to seeing this year. Let's do it!

D J, when they fell to 24-35 and still had busted pieces on the 26 man, I was still hopeful of a wild card, but only because Senga was to return in June and Ronald Acuna's loss would cripple the Braves. Well, Senga hardly made it back, and the Braves fought hard, but the Mets did it anyway. With Senga and Jeff back, this Mets team is as good or better than any team out there. Let's do it, is right.

When the Mets fell to 24-35, on the same day, the Padres were 32-30. They got healthy and have been formidable since then.

I know JM is healthy but not happy if Winker losses AB's. Also you just can't say enough about Lindor who of course is the real MVP even if the Robot in LA gets it. Are we really sure Ohtani isn't an Android? All kidding aside it wouldn't be the craziest thing now would it. His other worldly stats are really hard to believe and for LA to give him that insane contract they must know he'll perform at a superstar level and last along time. Think about it. What would the MLB rules be about Androids playing?

Gary, and if his arm was healthy, he'd be LA's best pitcher, too. Hopefully, we get to make him regret his choice of LA over the Mets, IF the Mets face them. Since the Mets were 24-35, they have been great - but SD has almost the same record since June 2 as the Mets.

Good pitching beats good hitting. Root for the worse pitching staff to win between the Padres and the Dodgers. I’m pretty sure that’s the Dodgers at this point. But, I hope the Mets bats don’t go to sleep again for a while, like they enjoy doing.

Hopefully, a Squirrel Revival is about to hit the west coast scene

I’m stealing this from Tim Britton, in today’s article for The Athletic:

“Their offense presents a problem in several ways. Los Angeles hit left-handed pitching better than anyone else all season, and the Mets would likely start three of the seven games with lefties, not to mention the significant role David Peterson would play in backing up Kodai Senga.

The Mets were concerned about facing the Brewers because of Milwaukee’s excellent plate discipline and refusal to chase outside the strike zone. The Dodgers were the only team in the National League that chases less, and they have the kind of game-changing power throughout their lineup that the Brewers lack.

And then, of course, there’s that trio at the top of the lineup. The tensest moments of the Division Series came because the Mets struggled at times to handle Bryce Harper; Los Angeles has three hitters of that caliber in Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman (even if Freeman’s status is in jeopardy because of his ankle injury). Ohtani is on an all-time heater, with 16 homers and 46 RBI over his last 38 games. Betts might be breaking out of a prolonged playoff slump with homers in each of the last two games for Los Angeles. And Freeman is Freeman, one of the pre-eminent Mets killers of this century.

Those three have combined for 300 plate appearances against New York pitchers likely to be on the NLCS roster, with a .924 OPS. (Kudos to Ryne Stanek, who has held the trio to a combined 3-for-17.)”

Further down from Tim Briton’s article today in The Athletic:

“In Michael King and Dylan Cease, the Padres also have two pitchers likely to get top-five Cy Young votes, and their bullpen is a clear strength, especially when compared to New York’s.

The San Diego offense doesn’t chase like Philadelphia’s, hits the ball out of the park better than Milwaukee’s and puts the ball in play better than anyone else in baseball. It’s diverse and goes nine deep, kind of like New York’s when it’s operating at its peak.”

Meanwhile, the Yankees have a cakewalk to the World Series…

Gus, it is incredible how easy the Yankees have it. Until the World Series.

This is the most hilarious comment "Sean Manaea, who'd have 100 more career wins if he cut his hair sooner."
