While all of us are waiting with bated breath for David Stearns to take action to enhance the depleted roster, let’s today analyze not the cream of the crop of available free agents or blockbuster trades but instead spend some time pondering what to do with folks who may or may not be here on Opening Day.
Pitcher Christian Scott was one of the young arms that caught a lot of attention in 2024 when he arrived for a brief trial before losing the rest of that year and all of 2025 due to Tommy John surgery. As a minor leaguer his numbers were certainly impressing. Over 49 games (37 as a starter) he has a winning record of 11-7 over a total of 191 innings pitched with a 3.19 ERA and an impressive WHIP of 1.059.
Upon arriving to the majors things did not proceed quite as well. Over 9 games in the starting rotation he went 0-3 with a 4.56 ERA along with a WHIP of 1.204. How much was due to the adjustment of facing stronger hitters and how much was a result of his arm woes is not known, but it suggests the club has not seen the type of pitcher they expected him to be based upon his minor league metrics. There, for example, he struck out 240 in 191+ innings pitched whereas as a big leaguer he struck out 39 in 47+ innings pitched.
While most attention is paid to the lackluster results from last Septembers less than dynamic duo of Brandon Sproat and Jonah Tong, the fact is that Scott preceded both of them on the depth charts and is allegedly healthy enough to return. Rather than handing him a starting rotation position right out of the gate and putting him through a 5-7 inning workload on a still healing arm, could the Mets instead look to him as a multi inning reliever to allow him to ease back into a regular workload until his arm strength is confirmed to be what it once was?
Another interesting player having a very nice Winter League performance is Luisangel Acuna. He’s shown in the minors he’s capable of hitting at a notable batting average but it has not yet translated at the major league level. He’s doing more time in center field to help theoretically address one of the club’s immediate needs where he could bring his glove and legs to help be a table setter in the lineup when he plays.
Similarly the Mets have chosen to have Ronny Mauricio concentrate on playing third base with Marcus Semien holding down second and Francisco Lindor owning shortstop. While this new role he’s asked to play is interesting given his strong arm and previously impressive offensive abilities it also is a bit puzzling if we believe as many do that Brett Baty is the starting third baseman. It is possible the club views Baty that way but no longer feels confident as Mark Vientos being a backup there, hence the need to find someone capable of taking over against a tough southpaw when it might make sense to bench Baty for a day.
There’s not much else going on in the outfield. Some are advocating rushing Carson Benge to the majors to play one of the vacant outfield positions, but he’s only had 90 AAA at bats. His overall numbers working his way up as an offensive player are impressive. His minor league career batting average is .280 with 17 HRs, 81 RBIs and 25 SBs. Right now the Mets are tipping a bit on the left side where it comes to offense and Benge is another hitter who is a lefty. While it wouldn’t surprise anyone to see Benge advance mid year or even as late as September, he likely needs more time to face minor league pitching and to play a single outfield position to demonstrate defensive mastery of it.
Other interesting in-house options like Nick Morabito, A.J. Ewing and others are eventually either going to work their way onto the Mets or be used to help secure other players in trade, but it’s not realistic to expect them at Citifield in April.

Scott - I'm told he's 100% and building up arm strength every day. All that will be lacking on OD is in-game experience which he will get plenty in ST. I'd like to think he will be rotation ready, but my guess he is either Queens pen bound on OD or the Syracuse rotation.
Acuna - reminds me so much of another great Mets defensive infielder that always hit well in the minors but never did for the parent club. Anderson Hernandez.
Mauricio - needs another year to establish himself on ONE POSITION and hit like hell as well. Me? Syracuse third baseman.
Mauricio, Mack, also needs to drop hitting lefty. 86 Mets plate appearances as a righty hitter: .134/.174/.195. Double those numbers and you’re OK. Darryl hit lefty, so should RMo.
Scott is an intriguing arm that should get major innings/outings in 2026. Baseball Ref has him 3-4, 4.15 in 65 innings. I think he throws more IP than that. With all the arms missing from the 2025 team, he will need to pitch more than 65 innings.
I just don't see anyone ready to make the jump come April. Which doesn't cause me to lose a minute of sleep.
My hopes are that David Stearns makes one good deal and ends the quest for a left fielder. Sign Kyle Tucker to a 5-year deal. Feel free to throw in a team option 6th year. Pay him well. He will play 2026 as a 29-yr old. He has averaged around 30 home runs and a 5.0-WAR for the past five seasons. There's nothing wrong here.
Stock up Syracuse with Jett Williams at 2B/SS, Ronny Mauricio at 3B, Carson Benge, Nick Morabito, and AJ Ewing in the outfield, and a rotation of Christian Scott, Jonah Tong, Brandon Sproat, Jack Wenninger, and R.J. Gordon.
Fill the rest of the holes in Queens with one-year contracted veterans
Play .500 ball until after the all-star game
Bring em' up
or... hit as many lefties as you can play against... it's it the minors and practice still makes perfect
I think Scott is going to come roaring back
OOPS
just checked Tucker's OAA
only played RF
-2
Pass
Scott should go to the bullpen to start the year and build up his arm.
Mauricio should get some reps in Outfield as well but stay in minors until he is back to normal.
Benge will be fine just start him as our opening day CFer. Spring training will be his triple an innings that he missed.
I think today’s the day something happens and someone signs that creates the snowball effect through out free agency, not necessarily today for us though?
Scott will be up as soon as they deem him “ready”. Hopefully he crushes it in ST. Gotta get the young guns going. Scott, Sproat, Tong, Ross, are all in the cusp. Wenninger (great write up Mike), Pintaro, Santucci plus more pushing up behind. They will feather in young talent all year as it matures & the new coaching staff creates solid pathways to onboard the talent.
The veterans who need to rebound better do so - fast. THAT would be a great “problem” to have
Benge
Ewing is your future Mets centerfielder. Benge is not as talented in center. He will be the Mets leftfielder.
I'll give you this... the Mets are getting closer to signing Tucker
Mack, Benge in RF as soon as Soto becomes the DH...lol.
RV, I look forward to the feathering of our young players over the next few years. I've been rooting for this for a while.
Mack, do you think Tucker will take a high AAV for 3 years? Or will we have to go all in?
I think Soto's future someday on the Mets is on first.
I think Tucker's agent will do everything he can do to get him a 1000 year deal... then settle on a one year push
Could it be that Vientos will be given a chance at first base rather than just expecting that he is out at third?
Gus, I think Vientos should be given 1 last chance to prove his worth. I think he should be given a shot at 1B, sharing the position and the DH position, and if Acuna doesn't make the team an occasional start to spell Baty.
I think that first base has been determined once Polanco was signed
Mack, I wrote this back during the 2025 season on Mauricio. When you consider what an acceptable minimum Mauricio slash line as a righty hitter vs. lefties would be, say .225/.285/.335, he is so far from it, I think he’d hit lefties much better as a lefty:
“ I think very highly of Mauricio.
He is (as I see it) just one silly (not so) little tweak away from becoming a bona fide MLB everyday hitter. He needs to stop hitting righty. Go 100% lefty swinging. At least that is what the numbers tell me:
Through Monday, his career MLB numbers against lefties were putrid:
11 for 81, 4 walks, 31 Ks, 1 HR.
MO: Against righties?
.283/.344/.441 as a lefty MLB hitter in his career. Strong slash, huh?
MINORS?
In 2022, in the minors, just .226 righty, but .267 lefty.
But in 2023, just .250 righty, but .297 lefty. And in those 2 years in minors as a righty, he walked just 9 times in roughly 260 plate appearances vs. lefties.
In 2025, he was 5 for 50, 1 RBI, hitting righty.
Awful, pretty much. And a lot less power righty.
So why do it? It is like, prior to the days of the DH, when pitchers got to swing the bat in games (e.g., Warren Spahn had 2,056 plate appearances), Ronny would have been a #5 hitter lefty, but a #9 pitcher’s slot hitter righty.
Time to dump the righty hitting?
BRENNAN RECOMMENDATION: This off-season, drop the righty swinging, Mo. Go 100% lefty. It would be great if the Mets could hire a few decent AAAA lefty pitchers to pitch to him this winter, to help with the transition.
Remember those Rocky movies against Mr. T. and Ivan Drago? Rocky knew he had to make significant adjustments to win. He trained to recalibrate his fighting style. It was hard, but it worked. To become a possible major league star, Ronny needs to recalibrate.
He needs to drop the righty at bats. Period.
