Jack Wenninger was abused last night
and now joins Jonah
Tong as two former “next up” AAA starters. Neither are now
ready to face the real guys that play this game. So where does that leave the
future 2022 rotation? Let’s start with the contracts… Sean Manaea ($22,009,000)
and Kodai
Senga ($15,000,000).
Then, you add the team-controlled guys… Nolan McLean, Christian Scott, Zac Thornton…
all of which have, at least, three more years with this team… let’s pretend
they all stay healthy. You happy with this rotation? I’m sure as hell isn’t.
There are more talented minor league starters, but none are in position to be
ready to be in the Flushing opening day roster… work is needed here, folks…

Ya know, everybody keeps
telling me not to worry about Elian Pena’s defense (or, lack of it). That everybody
down there makes a ton of them at that age. Well, he had another throwing error
last night, that came off two more the night before. Yes, one of those two were
reversed, but still… this is 23 errors so far this season. I don’t know where
that ranks. The DSL people don’t release this info. What I do know is this has
to improve greatly over the next three of four seasons…
Nick Lorusso was promoted to AAA-Syracuse this week. I never had him in my now departed Friday Prospect Report, because he just didn’t produce at the AA-level that warranted him being included.
He was, however, heading in the right direction, which probably landed him that promotion (it’s not that the Mets are desperate for a bat producing first baseman…).
Well, last night for Syracuse he went: 3-4, 2-R HR,
RBI and raised his AAA bating average to.364. Will it hold? Is it good enough
to make this column? Whatayathing?...
AA-Binghamton’s SP Gary Gill Hill debuted last night and impressed everyone in the stadium, going 5.0-IP, 3-H, 0-R, 2-BB, 4-K, 0.00. I never react to newbie starters until after their first three starts, but I though it was worthy to mention a positive outing by a new pitcher, in a sea of positive hitting by the new bats…
Holy Shite! 214-year old Calvin Ziegler had a tremendous extended outing… ONE inning, no runs given up, no hits allowed, no walks thrown, and every batter faced struck out. His ERA has now been reduced to a microscopic 23.14… do they have CY Young awards in the minors?...

Someone could say Wenninger was strong, except for 3 pitches yesterday. All HRs. Otherwise 5 hitless innings, six Ks. Same team that bombed Tong a few days ago.
Nick Lorusso has hit great after the last ice melted in Binghamton. Since June 1, 13 HRs, 38 RBIs, .almost .300 in 44 games. He is channeling Pete Alonso. Yet, he is below over-the-Clifford in Joe DeMayo’s new top 30. SMH.
Pena, I will start to get concerned if his errors don’t drop 50% next year, at age 19. For now, he’s 18.
Runs are rampant in the FSL this year, with the average team allowing over 5.5 runs per game, and roughly over 0.80 unearned runs per game. St Lucie has allowed almost 16% of its runs to be unearned, and they have company. Tons of runners, adding to tons of errors, no doubt.
One pitch was bad. The other two were fastballs appearing to be above the strike zone that the hitters caught up to. Credit to the hitters. They were the Indians’ #1, #3, and #14 prospects. So, all in all, I think Jack was clearly better than his #s.
Megill will be back next year. The Mets need one good starter because Thornton is a back end type. Scott is a middle, McLean is the only front end they will have.
Jester (the one time I was proud of auto correct!) had 32 errors and now he’s in the HOF.
What is with these writers love affair with Clifford ? Yes, he has power but he just can't make contact often enough. Everyone keeps waiting for some improvement in his strike- out rate ,but he is showing none year after year. He is not a top prospect. Heck, I don't even think he is really a low level prospect anymore.
Next year’s for-sure starters McLean, Scott, and Manaea ($25 mil is a thing). Thornton has an inside track for a spot. Beyond that, Santucci is probably next, with Tong and Wenninger needing giant steps forward to get consideration. Stock and Gill Hill could get shots in ST at least. They need at least one and possibly two starters.

Stok will be 37 in ST. Megill will be fully healed and ready to deal.
I don't understand the faith in Megill. He loses his focus when there is traffic on base. exactly the opposite of what one is looking for in a relief pitcher.. I think we need two starters: We can only go after one starter in FA who will be offered a QO, e.g. Skubal. Otherwise I think we will be looking at potential trades. Also Manaea will be gone after next year so even if we have someone ready in the minors, a trade makes sense.
Others will disagree but I think the best strategy for Tong is for him to be a two pitch high leverage reliever. At his age, if he gets it together, he can graduate to a starter. He had a curve ball as a third pitch but it was 12/6 and it had a lollipop break to it. If he can get it to break sharply it might be enough
