The Arizona Fall League got underway on Saturday the 3rd. All eight of the Mets' prospects have seen action over the first two games. There's still a month left to go in the ultra-young season, but let's take a quick look at how it's going so far.
Hitters:
1B/3B Cole Mathis:
Coming in at number 13 on Pipeline's Met top-30 list, he's the highest-ranked prospect for the Mets in the AFL. He was the Opening Day starting first baseman for the Surprise Saguaros. He went 1-for-4, with an RBI single in the seventh inning. Part of the Surprises' 9-3 win over Scottsdale.
2B Bruin Agbayani:
At 19 years old, he's the youngest prospect the Mets have sent to the desert. He was given the start at second base on Opening Day. He had a rough day in the field, making two errors. At the plate, he went 0-for-4, with a walk and a run scored.
INF Boston Baro:
Baro didn't play on Opening Day, but he was in the lineup as the starting third baseman in Surprises' home opener the next night. He went 1-for-3, with an opposite-field RBI single. He was taken out of the game after five innings. A curious decision, and one can hope it was just to give him some rest and not injury-related. Baro was saddled with spending most of his 2026 MiLB season on the IL.
Pitchers:
Calvin Ziegler:
Ziegler came on in relief in the second game of the season for Surprise. He was very efficient, getting three outs on just eight pitches, with five of them for strikes.
Peyton Prescott:
The Mets' 5th-round draft pick a year ago was given the Opening Day start for Surprise. He worked an inning and a third, giving up no runs on two hits, two walks, and one strikeout. He threw 37 pitches, with 20 of them for strikes as he danced in and out of danger.
Irving Cota:
Cota also pitched on Opening Day and put together the longest outing of any of the seven Surprise pitchers in this game. He went two and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on one hit and two walks, while striking out one.
Brendan Girton:
Girton came in after Cota and only pitched to three batters. He walked his first batter, gave up a hit to the next one, but was able to get Bryce Rainer to fly out for the third and final out of the inning, keeping Scottsdale off the scoreboard.
Ryan Lambert:
Lambert closed out Surprises' 9-3 victory on Saturday with a scoreless ninth inning. He allowed no hits and one walk, while striking out two. He threw 18 pitches, with 10 of them for strikes.

Lambert really needs a do-over starting with winter ball
None of these others will be eligible for a parent team debut for quite a long time
Good start, by and large.
Good for 8 pitch Ziegler, who was SO wild during his few 2026 regular season games.
Our Arizona guys are second citizens to these teammate studs (source: Mets website):
“This star-studded matchup of heavy hitters will feature five of MLB's Top 100 prospects. Surprise's offense is anchored by Sebastian Walcott (TEX No. 1/MLB No. 8), Aidan Miller (PHI No. 2/MLB No. 59) and Angeibel Gomez (KC No. 2/MLB No. 76).”
Indeed they are, but if some of our second citizen guys can put up good stats against the elite of MiLB, I'll feel great about the farm going into 2027.
