Side Note: Winter League Rosters are not always 100% accurate so I scour the box scores in detail everyday just to make sure I get everyone. Jairo Perez was 1 guy that I missed...on the Cardenales roster, he is listed as a non-MLB player when we all know he is a NY Met farmhand. So what has he done so far? Well he's played in all 7 games so far and he is raking to the tune of a .321 AVG with 1 HR, 8 RBI, and a fabulous 10.3% K rate.

Mets: Mets Payroll, Frank Francisco, Albert Cordero, Chase Huchingson, Matt Harvey

Late last month, ESPN New York's Adam Rubin reported that the Mets are facing the largest one-year payroll cut in major-league history, at least in terms of total dollars. With owners Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz deprived of the profits they derived from decades of investing with Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff, and struggling to find minority partners willing to provide a quick infusion of capital, the team is hemorrhaging money and facing a growing mountain of debt. According to general manager Sandy Alderson, the Mets lost $70 million last year, and made no real attempt to retain pending free agents Carlos Beltran (who was traded in midseason) or Jose Reyes (who departed for the Marlins in December). Barring even one additional midlevel signing, they could become the first team to drop $50 million in salary from one Opening Day to the next http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=15956

Frank Francisco was brought in to be the Mets' closer, and Jon Rauch made the trip from Toronto with him to set-up. At 32, Francisco still has a lively fastball and can rack up the strikeouts, though home runs are a bit of a problem. Rauch and Ramon Ramirez, the other guy in the Andres Torres trade, will compete for 8th inning duties. Ramirez has the better stats across the board and could be a value pick in leagues that count holds. 27 year-old fireballer Bobby Parnell, who was viewed as the closer-in-waiting before Alderson acquired Francisco, is still an intriguing option if you're chasing strikeouts but don't mind taking a hit to the rate stats. http://www.faketeams.com/2012/2/6/2769925/2012-fantasy-baseball-mlb-real-teams-preview-new-york-mets

C Albert Cordero - Obviously I’m a big fan of Cordero after his impressive 2011 season. Although, to be more specific I should say his wildly impressive second half. In fact, at the all star break the 21-yr old backstop was batting an anemic .219 with a .585 OPS and a K% nearing a brutal 23%. That’s when the Venezuelan native made some adjustments to his approach, utilizing a more conservative plan of attack at the dish. Suddenly he began making modest gains in walks while making much more significant cuts in strikeouts. This allowed his excellent natural power to begin coming through as his SLG rose each month as his K% fell. And while his all-around performance at the plate blossomed, his excellent defensive potential continued to shine through behind it. He would gun down 40% (24 of 60) base stealers while displaying excellent footwork/quickness. http://www.amazinavenue.com/2012/2/6/2768128/2012-amazin-avenue-mets-top-50-prospect-15-11

2-6-12: - mlb  - Chase Huchingson, LHP: The 22-year-old converted outfielder produced a strong year in the South Atlantic League, posting a 1.82 ERA in a swingman role that saw him compile 84 innings in 27 appearances (eight starts). At 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds, Huchingson's outfielder frame translates very well to the mound where he works with a low-90s fastball and a rapidly improving breaking pitch. Huchingson also kept the ball in the yard, allowing just one home run all season

2-6-12: - http://www.faketeams.com/2012/2/6/2775041/fantasy-baseball-spotlight-new-york-mets  - Rookie Watch: Matt Harvey, SP - The Mets have been famously impatient with prospects and that process may have ruined guys like Fernando Martinez or Jenrry Mejia. That shouldn't be a problem with Harvey who will be turning 23 just before the start of the season. He was the 7th overall pick in 2010 and last season was his first in the minor leagues. He was dominant at high-A, throwing 76 innings and striking out 92 batters while walking only 24. He moved up to AA Binghamton and while he wasn't as dominating (more walks, less strikeouts) he was still pretty good, especially for his age. The Mets are starting a youth movement and Harvey and Zach Wheeler (acquired for Carlos Beltran last year, 6th overall pick in 2009) are at the forefront of that movement. I personally like Wheeler more, but the right-handed Harvey should be up first... maybe soon enough to be worth rostering this season.

Mets – Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Garrett Olson, Albert Cordero, Justin Turner

1-3-12 - mets360.  - 5. Kirk Nieuwenhuis, OF, Triple-A, .298/.403/.505 in 221 PA - The only thing that held back Nieuwenhuis last year was an injured shoulder. Otherwise, he would have made his major league debut and would be a front runner for a backup outfield position in the majors in 2012. Now, Nieuwenhuis will likely return to Triple-A to prove he is healthy. The strikeouts are a concern and he’ll obviously never post a .407 BABIP in a full season in the majors. But all he’s done in his professional career is produce. Several years ago I compared him to Nate McLouth and I still think that holds. A .250/.350/.450 line seems attainable and that’s pretty valuable for a CF. Of course, Nieuwenhuis is probably better suited for a corner, which makes the McLouth comparison even better.

Garrett Olson:  Signed to a minor league contract on December 12th, Olson is a former first round pick of the Baltimore Orioles  in the 2005 entry drive.  He has some major league experience in each of the last five seasons, however his only "full" year of major league service was 2008, when he started 26 games for the Orioles, pitching 132.2 innings and pitching to a 9-10 record in the process.  Since that time, Olson has bounced back and forth between the majors and minors, acting prominently as a reliever whenever called up.  Originally thought to be a middle of the rotation caliber guy while in the Orioles organization, Olson no longer appears to be even a semi-long term fix at the major league level. http://www.metsfever.com/2012/01/what-options-do-mets-have-if-johan.html

metsmerized  - 34. Albert Cordero (C) The 21 year old right-handed hitter from Venezuela, was signed by the Mets as an IFA in 2008. At 5’11″ and 175 lbs., he was recognized as a good defensive catcher with advanced receiving skills, quick footwork, and an impressive throwing arm. Cordero made his stateside debut with Kingsport in 2010. It was there that he first began opening eyes by hitting .277 with 8 HR’s, 32 RBI’s, and a .466 SLG, in just over 200 AB’s, while at the same time throwing out 43% of would be base stealers (23 of 53). When 2011 started Cordero got off to a very slow start as the regular catcher at Savannah. At the end of May he was hitting only .208 with 1 HR, and his K/BB was 27/1. It was around that time that Cordero decided he had to shorten his swing and stay more in control, and to be more selective at the plate. In June, the first month where he employed his new approach, his OPS was .688. He then gained some solid momentum in July getting hotter as the month wore on and finished with an OPS of .777. By August he was literally on fire, with an OPS for this month of 1.343! In 103 August AB’s, Cordero had: 11 runs, 37 Hits, 6 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR’s, 15 RBI’s, for a .359 average for the month. Keep in mind that he is still very far away from Flushing, the South Atlantic League being a far cry from the majors. But with the development and skills he has shown so far, he has already moved all the way to the head of the Mets minor league catching class.

With a healthy Ike Davis back at first base, and Daniel Murphy expected to get the bulk of playing time at second base, it would seem that last year’s fan favorite, Justin Turner, may not just be looking at a real shortage of playing time, but he may not even make the cut out of spring training. One thing going against Turner is that Murphy and Tejada are entrenched, Cedeno got a major league deal, and Turne has the not so good fortune of having a couple of options left on him. That means he could be sent to the minors without passing through waivers where the Mets could risk losing him http://metsmerizedonline.com/2012/01/will-justin-turner-get-caught-in-a-numbers-game.html

Albert Cordero, Danny Muno, GCL Mets, Jose Reyes, Mike Cameron

12-19-11: - http://www.amazinavenue.com/2011/12/19/2622862/2011-mets-minor-league-season-in-review-savannah-sand-gnats - C Albert Cordero - STOCK UP - 2011 was an excellent season for the long-term value of Cordero in the catching-starved Mets organization. With growing expectations coming into the year, Cordero was slow out of the gates to say the least. However, things changed after he made some adjustments at the plate around the All-Star Break: That pretty much says it all. Oh except for his 24 of 36 baserunners caught stealing (40%). All in all, it was a very strong season for Cordero as he emerged as the top prospect on this Savannah club.

12-7-11: - http://baseballdraftreport.com  - Fresno State SS Danny Muno has good plate discipline, a little bit of speed, and enough defensive chops to hang at any infield spot, though I prefer him at second. He absolutely destroyed New York-Penn League pitching – compared to all Mets minor leaguers, he came in first in both BA and OBP and second in SLG – and likely positioned himself to start next season at St. Lucie. Considering their long-standing devotion to putting together strong teams in Brooklyn, the Mets must have been thrilled to have Muno tear it up for the Cyclones. Expectations have raised some, but if this is Muno’s peak, I’m sure the Mets could live with the return they’ve already enjoyed on their $10,000 investment.

In truth, the Mets eliminating one of the minor league teams isn’t that big of a deal. Coinciding with the prevalent money issues; the upcoming Madoff trial; the $40 million bridge loan the Wilpons recently took from Bank of America; that they’ve yet to pay back the $25 million loan of a year ago from MLB itself; that they let Jose Reyes walk without a fight; and have spent little on Major League players this winter—among many other things—makes the decision to dump the single A team simply look bad. The elimination of one of the Mets nine minor league teams isn’t going to cut enough money out of their spending that it’s going to make a significant difference to organizational finances. As the Times piece says, the Mets were one of three Major League franchises with nine affiliates; the decision, as Jim Duquette says, is more philosophical than cost-cutting. I think it’s more cost-effective to keep or expand the reach into the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and even places like Africa and the Middle-East than it is to have that extra A team with a load of players who—barring a sudden growth spurt; the discovery of a new pitch; a mechanical tweak at the plate or on the mound; or some other unforeseen stroke of luck—have almost zero chance of making it to the big leagues. http://paullebowitz.com.previewyoursite.com/blog/?p=3446&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

The four-time All-Star shortstop, Jose Reyes has recently signed a six-year $102 million contract with the Miami Marlins, stepping into a new team to prove his excellence as an accomplished shortstop. Prior to this multi-million dollar deal with the Miami Marlins, he was part of the New York Mets where he had an impressive .337 average, which also enabled him to win the first battling title. While the deal with the Marlins was a complex affair initially, the fogs of uncertainty dispersed with his agreeing to the six years contract. “It's a perfect situation in Miami,” Reyes said. “We have a lot of talent there and the new stadium, the weather, close to Dominican, a lot of Spanish people there, so I think I'm going to like it and enjoy it as much as I can.” http://blogs.bettor.com/Jose-Reyes-From-New-York-Mets-to-the-Miami-Marlins-a119643

Signed OF-R Mike Cameron to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training. [12/21]  It looked like Cameron was at the end of the line after being designated for assignment by the Red Sox and released by the Marlins—ostensibly over a verbal altercation with a flight attendant—over a 2 ½-month period late last season. At age 38, and with two seasons of ineffective play and injury issues behind him, he appeared to be facing forced retirement, and retrospective appreciations of his largely overlooked body of work began to pop up across the internet.  As those posts pointed out, a number of factors have conspired to keep Cameron’s Q Score low. He hits for low averages and strikes out a lot, which doesn’t endear him to old-school fans. From 2000-2007, a period that contained much of his prime, Cameron played in Safeco Field, Shea Stadium, and Petco Park, three of the least favorable offensive environments in baseball. Finally, much of his value is tied up in defense, which hasn’t always garnered the proper appreciation. With a few more FRAA, Cameron could pass Gary Pettis and Jim Busby to claim one of the 10 highest fielding value figures among center fielders since 1950.- http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=15723

Cutnpaste: - Brian Schneider, Albert Cordero, David Cone, Forbes on Jose, 2012 Ticket Prices

Brian Schneider, Philadelphia Phillies -- Ok, so maybe Schneider's now plying his trade for the club he idolized growing up, the very same club that sent the Mets to the playoff exile now reaching its fifth year. He was the guy charged with replacing Paul Lo Duca, which wasn't terribly difficult from the performance perspective but moreso from the fans' point of view. And he only arrived as the end result of Omar Minaya trading Lastings Milledge well after the outfielder's star prospect status had faded away. Schneider never did anything terribly wrong, though. He didn't hit that well, but covered up his shortcomings at the plate with his respected defense behind it. He earned $9.8 mllion for his services across 2008 and 2009, but the Washington Nationals signed him to that contract. He might ultimately be forgettable in Mets history, but he's probably easier for Mets fans to root for than Phillies third base coach Juan Samuel. - http://www.amazinavenue.com/2011/9/30/2459916/a-mets-fans-guide-to-recognizing-your-saints-in-the-2011-mlb-playoffs

10-3-11: - http://www.metsminorleagueblog.com/season-review-the-full-season-catchers  - Albert Cordero split time nearly evenly with Forsythe. For my money, he was the most improved Gnat hitter from Opening Day through the end of the season, and it wasn’t particularly close. Sure, he made some minor mechanical tweaks to put him in a better hitting position, and improve his balance, but the major difference was that he stopped chasing everything. Cordero hit .219/.248/.297 with eight extra base hits and four walks in 45 games in the first half and .330/.373/.439 with 15 extra-base hits and 11 walks in 59 games in the second half. He became very good at taking pitches on the outer-half into right field. It’s nice that he hit, but he has the tools to become a strong defender. He has really good feet and soft hands. He threw out 40% of the runners who attempted to run on him (24-for-60) which would have been good enough for fourth in the South Atlantic League. However, he could get sloppy at times, as his 17 errors and 14 passed balls attest.

David Cone (1992): OK this one doesn’t really count, as Cone was traded to the Blue Jays right at the end of August. But he was in the last month of his contract and it was generally assumed that he would not resign with the Mets. GM Al Harazin realizing Cone was leaving, went into panic mode and moved him quickly to the Jays. Backing up the old adage that even a blind squirrel finds a nut occassionally, part of the haul included an unknown second baseman named Jeff Kent. Unfortunately, the Mets didn’t know what they had in Jeff and watched as he fueded with teamates, the press and the fans until they shipped him to Cleveland in the ill-fated Carlos Baerga deal. Later Kent developed into a Hall of Famer with the San Francisco Giants. Cone went on to spectacular career: winning a World Series with Toronto and a Cy Young Award in Kansas City. He then went to the Yankees (they do have a fetish for ex-Mets, no?) where he won four rings, pitched a perfect game and got Mike Piazza out in a crucial spot in Game Four of the Subway Series. - http://www.metstoday.com/7084/11-12-offseason/adios-jose-five-free-agents-who-left-the-mets

In the final analysis as to whether the Mets should re-sign Reyes, there are three subtle but significant factors worth attention. One is that it is easy to rationalize signing a player to an overvalued deal because many fans and owners have become increasingly detached from the reality that real dollar values are at play, which is as much a result of the explosive growth of fantasy sports as it is the enormous sums of money that are part-and-parcel of today’s sports business. Another factor is that the past few years have shown the Mets success—both on the field and at the turnstiles—does not hinge on Reyes as much as might be believed. And, third, if they do re-sign him, it will likely be for somewhere near top dollar, though maybe for no better reason than to satisfy the self-delusion that just a little more time, a few more attempts and a good many more dollars will be exactly what is needed to show that the player is able to perform to the range and level of expectations that most have been waiting for him to play up to all these years. - http://www.forbes.com/sites/sportsmoney/2011/10/03/the-mets-and-jose-reyes-pay-for-performance-or-potential

Cutnpaste: Reese Havens, Jon Niese, RBIs, Evans to Catcher, Albert Cordero

9-3-11: - http://metsmerizedonline.com/2011/09/prospect-pulse-buffalo-2012-help-on-the-way.html  - Reese Havens - Havens will be embroiled in a fierce competition for the Mets 2B job in 2012. If they manage to retain Jose Reyes, the inside edge for 2B goes to Ruben Tejada, with Justin Turner, Daniel Murphy, Jordany Valdespin, and Havens all vying for the job. On natural ability and a balanced game, Havens may be the best baseball player here. His sweet left-handed stroke, is ideal for not just hitting, but hitting for power. And being a natural shortstop, he has made a fairly seamless transition to 2B. He just needs to stay healthy in order to open some eyes, and he could force his way into the picture anytime in 2012.

9-6-11: - .mlb.  - Though the Mets are not ruling out a return this season for starting pitcher Jon Niese, the left-hander has not progressed significantly since straining his right intercostal muscle last month. Niese is currently doing pool work in Port St. Lucie, Fla., and is "not close" to returning, according to assistant general manager John Ricco. "That midsection is kind of tricky, so we've just got to wait until he's pain-free," Ricco said. "When he sneezes, he feels it. It's not a sharp pain, but he still feels something in there, so we're not progressing him until he totally feels good."

9-6-11: - http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/  - RBI clearly is not a predictive statistic. A predictive statistic is one that correlates highly from year to year.[1]. What a player accomplishes in year X, we should expect him to accomplish in year X+1. As an example, look at xFIP. xFIP does not tell us what happened in the current year - how a pitcher was able to prevent runs - but rather tells us how one should have been able to prevent runs by looking at one's strikeouts, walks, while assuming a league average homerun rate. The assumed home run rate isn't even something that actually happened.

9-6-11: - http://mets.lohudblogs.com/2011/09/06/nick-evans-for-catcher/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+mets+%28The+LoHud+Mets+Blog%29  - Way back in October of 2009, I wrote that moving Nick Evans to catcher made a ton of sense for the New York Mets. After all, Evans had a plus bat, no clear on-field destination, and the Mets certainly needed depth at the position. Like many things concerning the Omar Minaya Mets, this was n apparently fleeting idea with no follow-through. Two years later, it is hard to see how anything has changed concerning Evans, or how he could best help the Mets. Evans certainly holds his own at first base- his 143 OPS+ this season is more than adequate for the position. Among catchers? It would make him a superstar, assuming he could merely hold his own behind the plate.

For a team that is basically using a platoon role for their current catcher, they also don’t really have a top prospect catcher anywhere in the minors! Luckily, I was able to find a bit of a sleeper candidate in Albert Cordero. Cordero has a good glove the plate, puts up decent power numbers (eight home runs, .189 ISO, 32 RBI in rookie ball), and shows breakout potential as a prospect. His power numbers were behind only Aderlin Rodriguez in rookie ball last season, and at 20 years old, he has already shined behind the plate defensively.
