Well he's played in all 7 games so far and he is raking to the tune of a .321 AVG with 1 HR, 8 RBI, and a fabulous 10.3% K rate.

MM's Top 25: #20 OF Travis Taijeron

Bats: R Throws: R
Height: 6' 2" Weight: 200 lb
Age: 25
Acquired: 2011 Rule 4 Draft, 18th round, California Polytechnic State University
2014: (AA) .248/.362/.486, 13 HR, 52 RBI, 1 SB (33%), 44 BB, 87 K
2013: (A+/AA) .271/.356/.531, 23 HR, 69 RBI, 1 SB (50%), 47 BB, 131 K

2011: (SS-A) .299/.387/.557, 9 HR, 44 RBI, 0 SB (0%), 22 BB, 64 K
The world is full of guys who know how to hit a baseball. However, very few know how to hit a baseball HARD. Travis Taijeron is one of those guys. While he may never hit over .250 in the big leagues, Taijeron has the ability to regularly OPS over .850 which is higher than any Met right now outside of Lucas Duda.
Taijeron swings and misses a lot with a K rate that is regularly over 25% but still maintains a healthy OBP thanks to a BB rate that is also over 10.5%. By SABR definitions, Taijeron is what we would call a "3 true outcome" player or a player who's stat will not fluctuate due to advanced metrics such as BABIP. When Taijeron gets base hits, its not due to luck, he just hits the ball really hard. During his time with Binghamton, he's on pace to hit 50 doubles and be a 30 HR 100 RBI guy.
In terms of a Mets comp, the organization hasn't had an OF bat like Taijeron since Cliff Floyd. An average to slightly below average hit tool with monster power, a strong OBP, but little speed. Defensively, as with most of the Mets OF prospects right now, Taijeron has a very sure glove and a strong arm. His average speed is played up in the OF thanks to his good reads and route running abilities. If he can improve his hit tool just a little bit and somehow get that K rate closer to 20%, the Mets may have something special here.
Ceiling: 20 HR Starting OF on a Second Division Team
Floor: Right Handed Power Bat off the bench

#21 OF Travis Taijeron (LR: NR)

Acquired: 2011 Rule 4 Amateur Draft, 18th round, California Polytechnic State University
2013: (A+/AA) .271/.356/.531, 23 HR, 69 RBI, 47 BB, 131 K

This 2011 Mets draft seems to be a lot stronger in the later rounds than the first few. Taijeron is another unlikely guy who basically forced his way onto this Top Prospect listing by hitting the living crap out of the baseball. Always known for his power (including a ridiculous .774 SLG in his college senior year), Taijeron has the plus plus power potential that can make any fan salivate over whether or not he has the tools to get to the major leagues and be that elusive #4 hitter that the Mets have been missing since Delgado left.
Taijeron is not without his faults however. Upon his promotion to AA Binghamton his batting average fell to far more pedestrian .246 and his K rate ballooned to 29.5%. Defensively, he is a strong defender in the corners but no longer has the speed/range to roam in CF on a daily basis. When coupled with roughly a league average arm, Taijeron seems like a sure bet to settle in as a LF if he can get to the majors.
Anticipated Assignment: (AA) Binghamton starting RF
Ceiling: 20+ HR hitting Second Tier Division LF starter
Floor: Right handed power bat off the bench.

Mack Ade – AM Report – 6-28-13 – Ricky Nolasco, Rehab Returnees, Travis Taijeron, Matt den Dekker
LAD have made progress in the talks for Marlins right-hander
Ricky Nolasco
I just
don’t understand how the Commissioner of Baseball can just continue to stand by
and let one man single handed dismantle an entire baseball team.
According
to ‘Cot Baseball’ the Marlins had a 2012 team salary of $101,628,000. It has
been reduced to $50,526,900, of which $12,500,000 was still being paid on
players long gone or trades long traded, and $11,500,000 is being paid to
Nolasco.
The math
is pretty simple here. $50,526,900 minus $24,000,000, totals to a current 2013
salary after this trade is eventually made of $26,526,900.
We’re
talking a major league baseball team in the 44th largest city in
America. This doesn’t count Ft. Lauderdale either.
The team
will be left with one, I repeat, one ballplayer with a contract past this
season (Jeff Mathis) and that’s only a 2014 $1.5mil commitment.
And, the
most important thing is the fact that the team is dead last with only 27 wins
in 77 games, has the lowest home attendance in baseball, and averages the least
amount of people attending a home game in baseball.
Any Board
of Directors would remove this guy, but the problem is we aren’t talking about
a publically traded company. No, we’re talking about one man who bullshitted
the city into a new stadium and bullshitted his players into singing one year
deals (which, by the way, will never happen again). We’ve already seen the first
round draft pick this year, high school LHP Matt Krook, say no-way Jose. Agents throughout the league are
steering their clients away from this team and you will never see a major free
agent sign a contract here without a long term guarantee.
No, Miami
is operating like a foreclosure and the Commissioner should be ashamed of
himself.
The Mets are getting healthier.
As of 3:32pm on 6-27, there are ‘technically’ six New York Mets in
various stages of rehab.
RP Pedro Feliciano – Feliciano is actually listed as part
of the Binghamton roster. The lefty has given up only one earned run in nine
outings for St. Lucie (1.93) and Binghamton (0.00). He seems pretty close to
being ready - eventual assignment: Queens
RP Tim Byrdak – Byrdak is just beginning his rehab
assignments, with two on June 24th and June 26th. His
combined stats at St. Lucie: 2.0-IP, 0-R, 3-K. I expect him to move on the
Binghamton by the end of the week - eventual
assignment Queens
RP Shawn Teufel – Teufel came off the DL and pitched for
Brooklyn on June 25th (2.0-IP, 0-R, 0.00). He’ll probably work his
way to St. Lucie and then the Mets will have to decide whether to send him to
Binghamton or Las Vegas - eventual assignment: Binghamton
or Las Vegas
SP Michael Fulmer – A nice rehab debut on June 2th for
the GCL Mets: 6.0-IP, 0-R, 6-K. Watch for him to remain with the GCL squad
until he is sent across the complex to the team he was scheduled to pitch for
on opening day this year - eventual assignment: St.
Lucie
SS Ruben Tejada – Tejada was supposed to start his rehab
with the GCL Mets on June 26th, but they have been rained out the
past two days. The Mets aren’t known for shipping rehab players around their
whole system. Look for Tejada to go from GCL to St. Lucie, then probably Las
Vegas. At that point, he’s keep his bags packed - eventual assignment: Queens
CF Matt den Dekker -
Is currently listed as a ‘non-roster invitee’ on the St. Lucie roster.
He will slowly work back wrist strength and may miss Binghamton and go to Las
Vegas for some good thin air to get healthy on. – eventual assignment - Las Vegas
So…
What happens if Tejada,
Byrdak, and Feliciano are all activated on the same day and put in the same
taxi?
Who goes down/DFA’d/cut?
My guess… Valdespin,
Edgin, Hawkins
Travis Taijeron – combined
A+/AA – 241-AB, .290/.376/.573/.949, 14-HR, 39-RBI, 73-K, 27-BB
My job is to keep bringing you back to players that you
need to keep an eye on.
Taijeron
is developing into prospect material as I type J There’s a lot of time
being spent with him in Binghamton, trying to get him to become more patient at
the plate. Let’s face it, the quality of pitching at the AA level is going to
be far better than it was at St. Lucie. Taijeron struck out 28% of the time in
A+ ball, but is currently striking out 27% at AA. No change. His immediate
problem is the fact that he’s not walking anymore, lowering his OBP from .379
to .298.
He’s not
going anywhere else this year and the hope is he finished the season in the
combined 20-HR/55-RBI, range.
Right now,
Taijeron is #2 behind Cesar Puello on the internal boards. I’ll keep you up to speed on his
progress this season.
Monaco Jr., Martin L -
Mack, Looks like either MDD has
either cut down on his swing, only 3KS in 41 at bats, or he has no power in
this wrist yet. Either way only 10 singles so far. Do you think this is by
design or the Mets are trying to turn him into a contact Punch and Judy
hitter.? I was more thrilled when I thought he was the second coming of Jim
Edmunds. Big swing and great defense.
Morning Martin.
The good news is den Dekker is off the
disabled list.
The bad
news is his current hitting has nothing to do with any learning process on not
striking out. He’s just getting his feet wet (or is it wrist wet?) and
‘throwing the bat out there’ which generates only singles. I’m told his game
currently isn’t very fluid so we’ll just have to give him some time.
One other
thing about this league and the hitters on this team. There aren’t than many
top pitchers going up against this team, meaning, if you are a big bat, you
should be feasting on what’s being thrown your way. Yes, the addition of Jayce Boyd and Kevin Plawecki has paid huge dividends,
but it doesn’t take a genius to look at the rest of the lineup, check their
batting average, and project their chances of going all the way some day.
St. Lucie
is a team with an excellent rotation, an average pen, two bats from Savannah,
and that’s about it.
Sorry
guys. Feel free to prove me wrong.

Mets: Travis Taijeron, Zack Wheeler, Ike Davis, Gary Carter
1-23-12 - http://www.amazinavenue.com/2012/1/23/2693134/2012-amazin-avenue-top-50-mets-prospects
#46) OF Travis
Taijeron - Taijeron (pronounced like 'Tyrone') was the Mets 2011 18th
rounder selection out of Cal Poly Pomona. As the center fielder for the
Tritons, the sturdy-built Taijeron (6'2", 200lbs) showed off his powerful
game with 16 bombs and a ridiculous .744 SLG as he battled for Div. II Player
of the Year honors. And he kept right on hitting in pro ball, leading the NYPL
in slugging and ISO (.258) while placing third overall in home runs in 56
games. It's become very clear that
Taijeron possesses plus-power potential. The problem is that he strikes out...a
lot. He'll have to improve that 28.5 K% if he's going to have success at the
higher levels though his long swing from the right side will likely always lead
to high K-rates and low averages. He does help negate that with solid plate
discipline (see, 9.8 BB%). And though the athletic 22-yr old played some center
for the Cyclones he profiles as a corner guy. But based on his very real raw
power alone he was a very nice mid-round value and remains worth watching come
2012.
1-27-12: - http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=6509
2. RHP Zack
Wheeler -Baseball-Reference Player Profile - Wheeler, the sixth pick in
the 2009 draft out of a Georgia high school, came over to the Mets in late
July, 2011 in a straight up trade for OF Carlos Beltran. Beltran wasn’t able to
jump start the Giants offense and get them into the playoffs before becoming a
free agent, while the Mets picked up one of the better young pitching prospects
in the game. In fact, Wheeler and Matt Harvey (above) could easily be termed
Top Prospects No. 1a and No. 1b, as they are very similar in raw stuff and big
league ceiling, with Harvey having the slight edge due to having pitched
successfully at a higher level. Harvey is also only 10 months older than
Wheeler, who was an older high school draft. Wheeler, a 2008 PG/Aflac
All-American, pitched for the East Cobb program in the summer and fall during
his high school years and had a long track record of consistent improvement,
not to mention good health and sound pitching mechanics, leading up to the 2009
draft. Wheeler is one of the rare pitchers that’s able to sit in the mid-90s
for long stretches of time instead of just touching that level now and again.
He throws with a pronounced downhill angle from an extended high three-quarters
release point that gives his upper-70s curveball even bigger shape and makes it
a second strike out pitch. His change up and slider are improving pitches.
Wheeler’s command improved significantly after his trade and that could be the
most significant factor in his eventually surpassing Harvey as a prospect and
future big league pitcher.
Personally,
my fingers are crossed that Ike Davis comes back
without any issues whatsoever, and I’m hoping for the best. But, one has to
believe that there will be some kind of downgrade in performance — at the very
least, more limited mobility in the field and/or decrease in Ike’s already slow
running speed. If that’s the worst of his problems, it won’t be a big deal,
since a slugging first baseman doesn’t need to run fast and doesn’t need to
have Ozzie Smith -like range in the field. However, the feet do play a role in
hitting, so we’ll have to keep an eye on Ike’s swing mechanics. http://www.metstoday.com/7403/11-12-offseason/mets-spring-training-question-21-ike-davis/
When the Palm Beach Atlantic University baseball
team plays its season opener Thursday night at Roger Dean Stadium, the No. 8
jersey of head coach Gary Carter will hang in
the dugout. Carter is battling an aggressive form of brain cancer that has
sapped his strength at a frightening pace. So his Sailfish players don't expect
him to wear the uniform or join them on the bench. But if he can make it to the
game, they said, his mere presence will be as uplifting to them as it was in
September, when they saw him for the first time since he was diagnosed with
cancer in May. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/2134506.html

The Keepers: - #87 - CF - Travis Taijeron
87. Travis Taijeron:
6-15-11: - link - Round 18: Travis Taijeron, CF, Cal Poly Pomona. Taijeron had a monster senior season for Division II Cal Poly Pomona, hitting .392/.534/.744 with 16 homers. He's a big, strong guy who has solid-average speed but figures to move to a corner at the next level. The bat certainly looks . He has a big, sweeping swing defined by excellent extension, and he brings a patient approach to the plate. The swing will cause Taijeron to be strikeout-prone throughout his career, but there's definite upside here. There's a good chance superior pitching will eat him alive, but there's a chance Taijeron makes something of himself.
7-14-11: - http://www.amazinavenue.com/2011/7/11/2270752/mets-minors-road-report-binghamton-7-9-brooklyn-7-10 - Pronounced "Tyrone" apparently, which means I have been adding like a half dozen unnecessary syllables to it in my head up until this point. Division II pick from Cal Poly Pomona who raked this year in school and has been hitting well in the NYPL so far. Problem is he is a thickly built dude, and not really fast, so I don’t think he stays in CF as he moves up. Didn’t really see his arm or range tested at the game, but on the one ball he had to track down deep he took a weird route to and got turned around. Would be a small sleeper for me if he could stay in center.
8-3-11: - Stock Up – Taijeron (pronounced “Tyrone”) had two more hits today for Brooklyn raising his 2011 batting stats to: .303/.415/.598/1.104, 7-HR, 29-RBI. Travis was a home run machine out of Cal Poly and may be a diamond in the rough. We’ll keep an eye on him.
8-8-11: - http://www.brooklyncyclones.com/news/topstories/index.html?article_id=1204 - TRAVIS TAIJERON - The 18th round selection in the 2011 Draft out of Cal Poly Pomona has been one of the hottest players in the league over the last month. He currently ranks 10th in the NYPL in hitting (.302), third in RBI (33) and home runs (7), is tied for the league lead with 21 extra base hits, and leads the NYPL in slugging (.564). Taijeron has 23 RBI in his last 21 games and is hitting .354 (28-79) since July 17th.
8-10-11 – Stock Up – Travis Taijeron - “Tyrone” just keeps on mashing the ball, this time was a grand glam eight home run of the season. He now leads the NY-Penn league with a .53 slugging percentage, which is 47 points more than the closest player in the ranking. It has to only a matter of days before he joins the Sand Gnats for their playoff run.

Ruben Tejada:
8-11-11: - http://mets360.com/?p=7550&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Mets360%2Ffeed+%28Mets360+Feed%29 - You have to love Tejada’s defense, passion and smarts for the game (excluding last night’s inexplicable baserunning blunder when Tejada did not slide into home on a sacrifice fly), but he’s too limited offensively to get excited about. He’s a good complementary player and not much more than that. In 396 at-bats with the Mets, Tejada has batted .232 to go along with a career OBP of .322. In that time, Tejada has only 19 extra-base hits (one home run) for an incredibly weak .607 OPS. It’s also not like Tejada offsets his lack of power for speed, as he has only three career stolen bases
Brad Holt:
8-11-11: - http://metsmerizedonline.com/2011/08/baseball-americas-mets-top-10-list-prior-to-2011-where-are-they-now.html - SP – Brad Holt: Lost his starting job because he could not find the strike zone. He was great in his first few starts, but then came the wildness. He totally lost command of the strike zone and never found it again. He was relegated to the bullpen where he has been much better. It doesn’t look like this former first round pick will ever be more than a reliever at this point. - Started 2011: Double-A Currently: Double-A
Mike Baxter:
8-11-11: - http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/2011/08/11/2011-08-11_homecoming_king_baxter_makes_first_start.html - Mike Baxter was born in 1984, so when he worked in the outfield before Wednesday night's game with Mookie Wilson, it wasn't quite the dream-affirming experience that it might have been had the newest Met been a few years older. Baxter grew up in Whitestone, Queens, and his favorite Met was John Olerud, in part because the first baseman took the same train to Shea that Baxter took to school at Archbishop Molloy. -
Nadir Crismatt
8-11-11: - http://www.dplbaseball.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=244:3-dpl-players-agree-to-terms-with-the-ny-mets&catid=1:latest-news - RHP - Dec 25, 1994; 6'1, 190lb (Trainer - Miguel Delgado)- Miguel Delgado identified Crismatt in Colombia more than 2 years ago, shortly after Delgado took Nadir under his guardianship to the Dominican Republic. Crismatt showed signs of development after a few months of his arrival in DR. As his arm strength and off-speed pitches developed he was selected to play in the DPL. Presently Crismatt doesn’t light up the radar gun but he works with command and pitch ability at 86-89mph, he spins his Curveball well and his Change-up is effective.
Stock: Pedro Perez, Juan Centeno, Travis Taijeron, Chin-lung Hu, Jordany Valdespin
8-10-11: - Stock Up – Pedro Perez went 2-5, HR, 1-R, 5-RBI today as part of a 17run DSL attack on Florida. Perez continues to play out of position (3B) and has now raised his BA to .265. The 6-1 switch hitter was born in 1994… my car is older than that.
8-10-11: - Stock Up – Juan Centeno – Centeno went 2-4 in the first game of today’s doubleheader and now sports a .305 batting average. Centeno was a quiet 32nd round draft pick in 2007 and has had a hard time getting at bats his entire five year Mets career. He hit .320 last year in 125 combined A/A+/AA and it’s nice to see he’s finally starting in his Rule V season.
8-11-11: - Stock Down – Chin-lung Hu – Hu is that slick fielding infielder the Mets signed before the season started after being released by the Dodgers. Hu actually had 43-AB in Queens this year (.050) before being sent down and then placed on the DL. He’s rehabbing this week for the GCL-Mets and is off to err… a typical Hu start: .083.
8-11-11: - Stock Down – Seems it didn’t take long for Jordany Valdespin to get back to his old tricks once he hit the AAA. Reports are that the diva decided to only jog out, not one, but two, ground balls during Thursday’s game. I’m sure manager Tim Teufel was just thrilled to lock horns once again with Spin. It will be interesting to see if he’s in today’s lineup. Good bat, but leopards can’t change spots… or was that tigers?

Cory Vaughn:
8-3-11: - Twitter exchange between Cory and I today:
SugarFreeCV Cory Vaughn - Growing out the stache #ilookmexican http://t.co/V4FPzxg
MackAde Mack Ade - @ @SugarFreeCV - you look like Hamilton Bennett
SugarFreeCV Cory Vaughn - @ @MackAde i might have to get rid of it now since u compared me to him ha lol
Luis Mateo,
8-3-11: - Stock Up – 8-3-11 – Mateo was a big time international signee last May and the Mets gave him a $150,000 bonus. I haven’t followed the DSL league much this season because just about everything is premature at that level. I did peek in at Mateo and the stats look fantastic: 5-1, 1.46, 0.65, 49.1-IP, 61-K, and only 3-BB. This is a first year DSL player that is 21, so it’s nice to see someone finish school for a change and tell the truth about their age.
Travis Taijeron:
8-3-11: - Stock Up – Taijeron (pronounced “Tyrone”) had two more hits today for Brooklyn raising his 2011 batting stats to: .303/.415/.598/1.104, 7-HR, 29-RBI. Travis was a home run machine out of Cal Poly and may be a diamond in the rough. We’ll keep an eye on him.
Greg Peavey:
8-3-11: - Stock Up – Peavey continues to pitch below the hype radar (hypdar). He went into Wednesday’s game 10-4 combined for A/A+ and had pitched 5-of-7 A+ starts with 1-ER or less. Well, he did it again on Wednesday, pitching a seven inning complete game shutout. Greg had a couple of rocky outings earlier this season for St. Lucie, but he has easily passed the rotation test while, at the same time, leaving all the prospect hype… err… hypdar… to others.
Ryan Fraser:
8-3-11: - Stock Up - We first started writing about Ryan when he was a successful closer last season for Brooklyn. This year he’s attempting to master starting for Savannah, and if Wednesday at Savannah was any indication, the Mets may have another starter to drool over: 5.0-IP, 0-R, 3-H, 5-K, 3.44. This was Fraser’s 22nd outing this year for the Sand Gnats and he’s an easy choice to begin next spring in the St. Lucie rotation.
