3-26-14 – TTF – 10 high school players on the rise — third edition – Ryan Castellani, OF/RHP, Brophy Prep HS (AZ) - The 6’-4”, 200 pound right-hander has been heating up at the plate recently. Over his last four games, he has gone 7-for-11 with two doubles, a triple and two home runs. On the season, he is now up to .391/.500/.783 with six doubles, three triples and two home runs. He has upside as a power-hitting outfielder but he also has an advanced feel for the mound. He can dial his fastball up to 93 mph with late, downward life. He adds a mid-70s curve and a change-up that sits in the 79-83 mph range and both project to above-average pitches down the road. Mi3-17-14 – TTF – 10 High School Players On The Rise – Michael Chavis, 3B, Sprayberry HS (GA) Chavis just continues to mash. The 5’-11”, 190 pound right-hander went 3-for-3 with two more home runs on March 14, upping his total to six over his first 11 games. He is also hitting .656/.738/1.344 with a 2.082 OPS, four doubles and nine stolen bases. He is playing shortstop now, but with his tremendous power, should make a move over to third base where his arm, glove and footwork will play well. 3-19-14 – TTF – Tyler Beede, RHP, Vanderbilt (2) - Beede has been a regular on this list, and he just seems to keep getting better. In a highly anticipated match-up against Aaron Nola and LSU, Beede may have taken the loss, but he was brilliant in defeat. Over 7.1 innings, he allowed no earned runs on just three hits. He added seven strikeouts to one walk and wasn’t hit hard all night. He again showed his unique ability to miss bats with his four-pitch mix, and the command was once again on point. He now has a 0.84 ERA, 0.62 WHIP with 40 K/6 BB over 32.1 innings, holding opponents to a .128 batting average. 3-20-14 – Matt Imhof, LHP, Cal Poly - I really liked Imhof to the Cubs in the second round earlier in the year. The 6’-5”, 220 pound southpaw has the ideal size you want in a frontline starter. The way he has been pitching this season, however, he may not be around when they are on the board at 43. With 55 strikeouts over 35 innings, he leads the nation in K/9 at 14.1. Through his five starts, he has a 1.29 ERA and 0.91 WHIP. He features a low-90s fastball and has solid secondaries to go with a clean, easy delivery. 9-27-13 - Jim Callis - The 2014 Draft is a solid group that impresses scouts more than the 2012 and 2013 talent pools. College pitching is always a prized commodity, and there's plenty behind Rodon, starting with right-handers Jeff Hoffman (East Carolina) and Tyler Beede (Vanderbilt). There's more velocity this year in the high school ranks, with righty Tyler Kolek (Shepherd, Texas, HS) leading the way with a consistent upper-90s fastball. The pitchers stand out more than the position players, though there are plenty of intriguing bats. Alex Jackson, c, Rancho Bernardo, Escondido, Calif./San Diego Show - After standing out as an underclassman at the Tournament of Stars, Area Code Games and Under Armour All-America Game last summer, Jackson is one of the most famous players in the class. At 6-foot-1, 224-pounds, Jackson has a strong build with muscular legs and a wide back. The Oregon commit has above-average bat speed and feel to hit, although he has a deeper load and more of a bat wrap than he used to, lengthening his swing. Jackson has plus raw power. He has one of the strongest arms in the class, a plus weapon capable of pop times in the low-1.80 range. Jackson is more athletic than most catchers and runs well for the position. He has gotten some time in the outfield and could profile as a right fielder. 9-21-13 – The name Zane Gray is recognizable to most well-read people and Big Island Baseball righthanded pitcher of the same name isn’t the first player of that name I’ve come across. Two weeks ago the Florida State commit sparkled in a three-inning outing in Syracuse, New York during the East Coast Pro Showcase, easily carving through the outing sitting 92-94 mph and showing two future plus offerings in a low-80s slider and mid-80s changeup. His follow-up outing in Long Beach at the Area Code Games last week involved a step back, as he struggled to find consistency in his offerings and left some evaluators wondering whether he was running on empty after a long summer schedule. - Development: This past weekend in San Diego, Reid-Foley was once again dominant—this time in a one-inning showing during the Perfect Game All-American Classic. His fastball sat in the 92-94 mph range, touching 95, and his slider was back to flashing plus with hard bite and tilt. It was an important outing in front of a lot of high-level decision makers, particularly after struggling in front a lot of the same faces last week in Long Beach. Jackson was a bit more inconsistent over the weekend, but if you had to ask me which player I like better now, I’d take Jackson. He’s not a catcher, but he’s got the athleticism and arm strength to be a very good rightfielder, and the bat will certainly play there with plus bat speed and above-average power. 7-28-13 - Iona College baseball rising senior outfielder Joe Torres was named Most Valuable Player of the 2013 New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game for his performance in leading the East squad to a 2-1 victory Sunday evening. Torres came off the bench as a reserve, singled in his only plate appearance and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, Torres sparked the East's decisive rally of the contest. The Laconia outfielder slung a base hit to left before moving to second on a hit by pitch. One batter later, Tyler Boyd (Mystic Schooners / Seton Hall University) drilled a single to right field.
