2-11-14 – PG/Florida HS Dream Team – P – Cobi Johnson, Sr. James W. Mitchell - Johnson brings a high baseball IQ on the mound, going out there with a game plan that he executes. It is easy to project the 6-foot-4, 180-pound Johnson to throw in the mid-90s one day and he is already throwing 93 mph, but he dominates his outings as though he was showing the big fastball velocity. Of the roughly 1,700 players on the 85 teams, perhaps none looks more like a big leaguer than RHP Scott Blewett. He won't turn 18 until April, but Blewett (Baker High, Baldwinsville, N.Y.) already is a sturdy 6-foot-6 and 210 pounds. The Syracuse Sports Zone right-hander has a sound delivery, especially for a teenager with such a big frame, and the ball comes out of his hand well. Blewett opened the game by firing 91-94 mph fastballs and touched 96 one time in the first inning. 10-27-13 – PG Showcase – RHP  Jayce Vancena (Lake HS, Millbury, Ohio) tossed four innings, allowing two hits and walking none, while striking out two. He settled in around 87-88 with modest boring action, revving up to 90 on occasion during two-strike counts or against the heart of the Scorpions lineup. He mixed in a curveball that has improved since East Coast Pro at 73-74 with 11-5 shape, though the pitch is still round and lacks bite. His best offspeed offering may have been his 78-79 slider, though he used it as his secondary breaking ball. He kept lefthanders off balance with a 74-76 curveball, as well as righthanders with his 79-80 changeup. 8-21-13 – On defense, Alex Jackson could be a catcher or right fielder. But I don’t think he’ll be better than average at either position. Starting with catcher, I didn’t see the agility behind the plate for me to believe he could be an average or better defender. The strong hands are evident, though, as is a plus arm that can profile well in right field. Most people I’ve talked to think he’ll be in right, but there are some believers that he could stay behind the plate. It only takes one team to see the dream. 8-13-13 - The Perfect Game All-American Classic in San Diego - * It was my first look at Ti’Quan Forbes (Columbia High School, Miss.) — who the scouts that I talk to have raved about — and I get the appeal; he’s got good size (6’4″, 175) and he looked good during infield with above-average speed and a strong arm. Michael Kopech, RHP, Mount Pleasant HS (TX) - Another one of those loose arm, projectable right-handers, the 6’-4” Kopech has an electric fastball that can touch 93 mph and he has some deception to his delivery. His mechanics need some refining and he needs to command his secondary stuff better, but the size and stuff is already there.
