A Mack Opinion (A.M.O.):
I know the Mets want Niese to win this battle for the 5th spot. Jon is younger, and as Marty Noble said this morning, he can learn a lot more... but, he has an option, so stop sweating it. Send him to Buffalo for 4-5 rotations to work out the kinks.
Regarding Nieve, no, he has no options, so in my book, either pitch your ass off or hasta la vista, baby. There's nothing wrong in signing guys like this, but there's a lot wrong keeping them around if they can only produce a 6 ERA.
Who deserves the 5th starter?
Do we really have to debate this anymore?
Everybody involved in the Mets organization... players, coaches, brass, beat reporters... all know that Nelson Figueroa has earned this position. He was second last year for all Mets pitches in eating innings, had an all-star winter, and is runless this spring.
Why hasn't the Mets given him the job? He has had his contract renewed for one year, so that's great, but why can't the Mets pat this guy on the back and give him the job he has earned?
Frankly, the Mets have a lot bigger problem with the SP4 slot (Maine).
I really don't care how old he is, nor does it matter if his third cousin, twice removed, in a Yankees fan (made this up).... just give him the job.

The Mets really love to jerk around Figueroa, in particular, for some reason. Well, let's get serious, the Mets jerk around a lot of players, but someone in the front office must hate Figgy.
