A Sprint:
Should the Mets go into an early season funk, you’ll see the kiddie corps at Citi trying to keep the fans interest and keeping them spending money… What you won’t see if these vets don’t work out is Gangsta J-Man at Citi. He’ll be home in California in time for Memorial Day… metsmerized
-tough call for Jerry and Omar this season.... on one hand, they both could be dumped by the all-star break if they don't play .500 ball up to then... and yet, talent wise, they should keep the Class Of 2011 down on the farm for one more season... damned if you do.... sounds like my last job when we were merged into Clear Channel...
-Kelvim:
Escobar said he will start not with playing catch but with long tossing, which is a more advanced stage of rehab... Escobar, who threw only five innings last season with the Angels, has a career 4.15 ERA in 12 major league seasons with the Blue Jays and Angels before joining the Mets this offseason. His best season came in 2007, when he went 18-7 with a 3.40 ERA. Escobar admitted he was frustrated with his spring training setback... "It can be quick," he said. "If I start throwing and everything goes well, you never know." - .nypost -
-you're right, Kelvim... ya never know...
Turning Mejia Into Parnell:
An interesting blurb in the nypost this morning:
The Mets manager told The Post yesterday that if Mejia makes the team but struggles in his bullpen role and gets sent back to the minors, the righty would very likely resume pitching there as a starter
Here's the problem...
The same thing happened to Bobby... err, I'm sorry... Robert Parnell. You raised the pup as a starter, turned him into a successful releiver, then asked him to start again when everybody went down last year. Rather than say 'good job, nice try, now, go back and do what you do well...", you put him into arace for his old pen job against new pitchers you just signed.
Pitching doesn't work this way, Jerry...
You can't just turn a light on and off and be successful, both physically and mentally, while on the mound.
Ask Eddie Kunz.
Ask Aaron Heilman.
And while you're at it, ask Mike Pelfrey and Brad Holt what it's like to be told everything you have done well all your career isn't good enough for this team.
My fifteen seconds are up.
1st Round Picks:
Joe D over at Metsmerized sort of trashed the Met minor league system, starting with this statement:
"The Mets have had the luxury, if you take pride in having the worst record a luxury, of having the first overall pick in the draft 5 times since 1965. Putting them in order from 1965 to present you have Steve Chilcott, Tim Foli, Darryl Strawberry, Shawn Abner and Paul Wilson."
I agree with Joe on the record of the Mets poor drafting over the years, and I have been very critical of the lack of quality and money in Omar's draft system, but we can't go back this far anymore. This approach represents different owners, GMs, managers, and a completely different economic climate.
I cold spend days writing about the increased talent in the CURRENT Mets minor league system... in fact, I have... it's called "The Keepers".
But I also feel it's not talented enough. More time, more money, and more expertise are needed in both the drafting process as well as the international signings.
Pre-Existing Conditions:
I watched the complete C-Span coverage last night on that reality show called the health care debate. No Fox rants, no CNN coverage... just the facts, jack.
My only question at this point is:
Does this mean the Mets' players are now covered for pre-existing conditions or do they have to wait until 2014 for that to go into law?
