The B-Mets entered the ninth down just two runs after being in an eight-run hole earlier in the contest. However, the gap grew to four thanks to a Carlos Rivero RBI single and a Cord Phelps RBI fielder’s choice in the top of the ninth off reliever John Lujan.
In the Binghamton (1-3) half of the frame, catcher Luke Montz got things started with a single down the first base line. But, he was quickly erased on a 4-6-3 double play turned by the Aeros. With the game seemingly in hand, reliever Vinnie Pestano walked Zach Lutz to start the rally. Shortstop Luis Hernandez and second baseman Jose Coronado followed with singles to fill the bases. Centerfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis then struck with an RBI single to get the B-Mets within three. Representing the winning run, the next hitter, first baseman Nick Evans, fouled out to first to end the threat and the game.
The two teams were held scoreless by starters Mike Antonini and Paolo Espino until the fourth. Antonini allowed the first four men to reach in the frame, including a Josh Rodriguez RBI single. After getting Wyatt Toregas to foul out, Tim Fedroff singled home another run to make it 2-0. With the bases still loaded, Lonnie Chisenhall came next and reached on fielder’s choice to first on which Evans threw home to force the runner. Montz attempted to complete the double play by throwing back to Evans, but his throw hit Chisenhall in the back, which proved pivotal. At that point, Antonini departed in favor of righty Josh Stinson who promptly cleared the bases courtesy of a grand slam by Nick Weglarz, pitting Akron (3-1) a 6-0 lead.
Binghamton got a run back in the bottom of the inning when leftfielder Lucas Duda lifted off with his second home run of the season, a solo shot to right. However, the Aeros struck for three more in the sixth, expanding their lead to eight.
