From Press Release:
Augusta, GA – The Augusta GreenJackets snapped out of a three-game losing streak with five runs in the sixth inning to overtake the Savannah Sand Gnats in a 9-5 win. Augusta avoids the sweep with the win and splits their first eight-game homestand of the season.
Trailing by one in the sixth, Augusta sent nine hitters to the plate. With two out, Chris Dominguez belted a double to tie the game at three. Later in the inning, Ryan Lollis’ two-run single gave the GreenJackets their first lead of the night. Juan Martinez and Ryan Cavan each brought home a run on a double and triple respectively to put Augusta in control.
Zack Wheeler looked much better in his third start than in the first two, retiring the side in four of the five innings he worked. His only trouble came in the third when he allowed a walk and three hits, the biggest of which was Wilmer Flores’ bases loaded, bases-clearing double to put the Gnats up 3-0. Augusta answered in the bottom half of the inning as Martinez scored on a Flores throwing error and later in the inning, Tommy Joseph singled home Daniel Cook to pull to within a run.
Savannah got one back on a groundout in the eighth but Lollis’ first home run of the year in the bottom half of the inning triggered two more runs, with Cook’s double bringing in the second. The Gnats would score a meaningless run in the ninth as Jason Jarvis got Pedro Zapata to bounce out to short and end the game.
Wheeler allowed three runs on three hits – all in the third inning – while walking one and striking out five. Sand Gnats starter Armando Rodriguez (0-3) allowed five runs in five innings, scattering four hits and three walks with five strikeouts.
Jose Casilla (1-0) picked up the win in two scoreless innings of one-hit ball with three strikeouts.
Flores finished a banner series for Savannah, with seven hits – all for extra bases. He doubled five times and homered twice, with a whopping 13 RBI’s in the four-game set.
