LAST GAME: Righty Brad Holt made his much anticipated
2010 debut and tossed the first two innings of Saturday’s 5-1
loss to New Hampshire. Holt allowed a run on three hits and
struck out two to take the loss. The Fisher Cats took control
early with a run in the first inning and didn’t look back with
staff ace Kyle Drabek on the mound. Drabek fired 5.2 innings
of shutout baseball with seven strikeouts. He faced two over
the minimum through five innings. The B-Mets lone run came
in the ninth on an RBI double for D.J. Wabick off New Hampshire
reliever Vince Bongiovanni, who was making his first
appearance of the season. Dylan Owen followed Holt and
allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits over five innings.
Binghamton was held to just four hits by three different pitchers.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Scott Shaw will put his 2-
0 record on the line in his fourth start of the season this afternoon.
The young right-hander picked up a win in Binghamton’s
15-3 victory over Portland April 20 at Hadlock Field, where he
tossed five innings, allowing three runs on four hits with a
season-high four walks issued. Shaw has thrown 12.1 innings
this season with a 9.49 ERA. He led St. Lucie (High-A) last
season in numerous categories, including starts (26), innings
(149.2), wins (8) and strikeouts (118). The righty was drafted
by the Mets in the 13th round of the June 2008 draft out of
the University of Illinois.
RHP Randy Boone will make his second start of the season in
the series finale today. He last started April 21 versus Trenton
and took the loss after permitting five earned runs in 4.2
innings despite recording a season-high seven strikeouts. On
the year, he is 1-1 with a 3.29 ERA in 13.2 innings. He made
23 starts for the Fisher Cats in 2009 and tallied a 9-8 mark
with a 3.70 ERA in 129 innings. He was drafted by Toronto in
the June 2007 draft out of the University of Texas in the seventh
round.
GOOD PITCHING BEATS GOOD HITTING: The B-Mets who lead
the Eastern League in most offensive statistics have been
silenced in their current series with the Fisher Cats. Entering
the series, Binghamton was averaging 5.7 runs per game but
have been held to a total of seven runs and 19 hits through
the first three games of the series.
WALK THIS WAY: Whereas the B-Mets pitching staff leads the
Eastern League in walks issued (80), the hitters lead league in
walks taken (83). Binghamton third baseman Zach Lutz leads
the leagues in walks (15) and teammate Lucas Duda isn’t far
behind either (14) in a tie for second. The team has reached
base at a feverish pace with an on-base percentage of .362
