Scott Kazmir:
One of the Los Angeles Angels' strengths -- depth in the starting rotation -- became less formidable Saturday when the team announced that left-hander Scott Kazmir will begin the season on the 15-day disabled list. Kazmir showed up in Tempe, Ariz., with a strained right hamstring on March 17, then missed a spring start with a tight muscle near his left shoulder. Manager Mike Scioscia is confident Kazmir will return after missing one start and rejoin the team when it begins a three-game series in Yankee Stadium April 13. Kazmir's scheduled start against the Oakland A's Friday will be made by Matt Palmer, who likely would have been headed to Triple-A if not for Kazmir's injury. - espn
Royce Ring:
Yankees optioned LHP Royce Ring to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Ring inked a minor league contract with the Yankees this winter and posted an impressive 2.25 ERA in nine appearances this spring. He will be recalled if there's an injury to one of the Yanks' current relievers. - rotoworld
Jorge Julio:
The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced the signings of pitcher Jorge Julio. Julio began the 2009 campaign as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers, appearing in 15 games and holding opposing batters to a .217 average, while recording 13 strikeouts over 17.1 innings of work. The former Major Leaguer would finish the season in the International League, playing for both Durham (AAA, Rays) and Indianapolis (AAA, Pirates). Over his nine-year big league career, the 31-year-old has also spent time with the Baltimore Orioles, New York Mets, Arizona Diamondbacks, Florida Marlins, Colorado Rockies, and Cleveland Indians. He has recorded 17 wins and 99 saves over 453 appearances. Julio owns a 4.43 ERA with 448 strikeouts in 467 innings pitched, while holding opposing hitters to a .244 batting average. His best season in the Majors came in 2002 as a member of the Orioles. The righthander posted career-bests with a 1.99 ERA, five victories and 67 appearances, while recording 25 saves and 55 strikeouts in 68 innings pitched. - atlantic league
Jermaine Dye:
Or, it could just be the natural cycle of the game that goes back and forth between eras dominated by offense and eras dominated by pitching and defense. There’s no doubt that money plays a big role in that. As hitters dominate, good pitchers become more valuable. As athletes see the value of pitchers rise, they’re more likely to go into the game as pitchers. As the value of defense rises, players work more on their defensive skills. At the same time, teams look less at hitting skills (Jermaine Dye still doesn’t have a job). - musings
Scott Schoeneweis:
As expected, LHP Scott Schoeneweis got the nod over RHP Joe Nelson for the final spot in the bullpen. Every indication was such this afternoon and a team source just confirmed it to the Globe. The choice for Nelson is to either go to Pawtucket or retire. He cannot opt out of his contract until June. Given how often teams change relievers, Nelson will almost surely go to Triple-A.
-boy, I hope not resigning this guy was the right idea this spring… he really never was given a fair shot last year by anyone on the pitching staff…
