From Press Release:
Binghamton shortstop Luis Hernandez smacked his first home run of the season to break up New Hampshire starter Luis Perez’s no-hit bid Sunday afternoon at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium, but the B-Mets fell 3-1 to split the series with the Fisher Cats. Binghamton starter Eric Niesen took the loss after allowing two runs, one earned, over four innings.
Binghamton’s (6-5) lone run came in the sixth inning. After Kirk Nieuwenhuis grounded out, Hernandez roped a solo shot over the right-field wall to get the B-Mets within two, but that was close as they would get.
Perez allowed just the one run in seven innings to pick up his second win. The lefty has allowed just two hits in 17 innings this year. Trystan Magnuson tossed the eighth scoreless and Danny Farquhar worked the ninth in similar fashion to nail down his third save.
New Hampshire (6-4) broke on top in the second when Niesen loaded the bases with no outs courtesy of a walk, a hit by pitch and a single. Manny Mayorson, who walked to open the inning, was pushed across on an Adam Loewen double-play groundout, making it 1-0.
In the third, the Fisher Cats took advantage of a Jose Coronado error with two outs to add a second run. With men at first and third and two outs, Mayorson hit a routine ground ball to third that Lutz fielded and fired to second. However, Coronado was handcuffed by the throw and dropped it allowing Jonathan Diaz to score from third.
New Hampshire’s third run came home after reliever Josh Stinson loaded the bases on three consecutive singles with one out in the fifth. Adam Calderone lofted a sac fly into left that pushed across David Cooper, making it 3-0.
Zach Lutz and Lucas Duda both reached base three times, but failed to score. Lutz was walked three straight plate appearances by Perez and Duda was hit by pitches twice and walked once.
