Rome, GA – The Rome Braves fell to the Savannah Sand Gnats Saturday night 9-2 in front of 3,547 fans at State Mutual Stadium. It was Rome’s fifth consecutive loss, dropping the Braves to 5-5 on the season.
Savannah took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double by Wilmer Flores. The Gnats’ bats broke out in the second with six runs to extend their lead to 7-0. The scoring started with a two RBI single by Pedro Zapata, followed by an RBI ground out from Juan Lagares. Flores earned another RBI on a single to center that scored Zapata, and would later score himself on a fielding error. The scoring ended in the second with an RBI single by Kai Gronauer to bring home Rafael Fernandez.
Rome scored their only two runs of the night in the bottom half of the second. An RBI double by Matthew Weaver scored Chris Lovett. Later in the inning, Cory Harrilchak singled to bring in Alberto Odreman for the second run.
Savannah added insurance runs in the seventh inning on a force out that brought in Cesar Puello, and again in the ninth on a single by Rylan Sandoval for the final 9-2 score.
Darin Gorski (1-0) earns the win for Savannah while David Hale (0-1) picks up his first loss of the season for Rome. Taylor Whitenton gets his first save for the Sand Gnats.
