Rome, GA – The Savannah Sand Gnats defeated the Rome Braves Friday night 4-1 before a season opening sellout crowd of 5,105. It was Rome’s fourth consecutive loss.
Savannah scored twice in the first inning after two outs on a two RBI triple by Rafael Fernandez for the 2-0 score. The Gnats added to their lead in the third on a sacrifice fly by Fernandez to make the score 3-0.
Rome scored their only run of the night in the bottom half of the third on an RBI groundout by Cory Harrilchak.
Savannah added an insurance run in the eighth on a two out single by Cesar Puello and held on for the 4-1 victory.
Collin McHigh (1-1) earns the win for Savannah while Arodys Vizcaino (1-1) picks up his first loss of the season for Rome. Brandon Moore gets his second save for the Sand Gnats.
