The Mack Draft Report - Dec. 3, 2010
Matt Barnes: - 12-1-10 from: - http://www.5tooltalk.com/dandydozen.html - Connecticut - 6’4”, 205 R/R - Barnes made the most of pitching both on the Cape and for Team USA last summer, and has put his name squarely in the mix for the top 10 overall picks for next June’s draft. He has a prototypically projectable and strong pitching frame, with tall, angular proportions. He throws on a downward plane, with a little bit of late movement on his fastball. He pitches comfortably in the 92-94 range, maintains that velocity deep into ballgames, and has the ability to touch 95-97. His arm action is free and easy, although he does have some other mechanical issues to iron out to become more consistent. His secondary pitches also lack consistency, but he does have the ability to add and subtract off of his breaking pitch between a curveball and a slider, and can also throw a changeup. When all four pitches are working for him, he’s extremely tough to hit, and he has continued to get better since arriving at UConn. If things really come together for him next spring, he could be considered among the top three to five overall picks.

Tyler Rahmatulla: - http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/baseball/news?slug=kr-rahmatullaucla120110 - Overcoming adversity can be a tough chore for some players, but UCLA junior infielder Tyler Rahmatulla isn’t your average player. He’s been through more in two seasons than most players will face in four seasons after suffering a broken foot to start fall workouts. Still, when Rahmatulla talks about the obstacles he has had to overcome, he shrugs them off as if they’re not a big deal. He’s much more focused on helping the Bruins improve enough on and off the field to return to the College World Series and capture the program’s first national title.

Zach Cone: - http://www.collegebaseballdaily.com/2010/12/02/top-100-countdown-zach-cone/#more-31822 - We continue the countdown today at number 49 with junior outfielder Zach Cone from Georgia. The Stone Mountain Georgia native attended Parkview High School where he won four letters. As a senior, he had a .425 batting average, eight home runs 17 stolen bases, a .510 on base percentage while going 6-0 on the mound. He was named Team MVP while picking up First-Team All County honors. He was a third round selection by the LA Angels of Anaheim but decided to become a Bulldog. Cone made an immediate impact in the Georgia lineup in his freshman season in 2009. He appeared in 45 games with 20 starts as he hit .323 with four home runs and 18 RBI. He was even better in the postseason as he .417. He spent the summer of 2009 with the Cotuit Kettleers as he played in 39 games hitting at .243 with three homers and 20 RBI.
Miami: - http://baseballdraftreport.com/ - It’s funny to me that two schools with a pretty well established athletic rivalry would go to such great lengths to differentiate themselves from each other by coming up with two distinct hitting philosophies. That is what’s going on with Miami and Florida State, right? The two teams decided to employ completely different approaches to scoring runs in an effort to finally determine which offensive style leads to the most runs scored. In some seriousness, the current lineups at Miami and Florida State couldn’t be more different
INF Noah Zipko — Wabash Valley JC - http://blugrassbaseball.com/ - •2010 Stats: .359 BA, 2 2Bs, 13 RBI (Formerly played at Campbellsville University) - •Rob Fournier: “Noah will be counted on as a leader of our team. He is a great all-around player and our team feeds off his energy. We are looking for big production from him this season. He is the type of player that a coach wishes he had for the next four years
Mikie Mahtook OF, LSU - http://www.draftsite.com/article/2011-MLB-Draft-Preview-College-Hitters/43 - Coming out of high school Mahtook was one of the top two sport players in the 2008 draft. As a top quarterback prospect, many thought he would wind up playing both for LSU; it looks like sticking to baseball has paid off. Mahtook is insanely athletic, reportedly running the 40 in 4.4 seconds. In his first big opportunity at playing time for the Tigers, he took over centerfield and the lead off spot and went on to become the SEC tournament MVP in 2009. Mikie has a very quite swing, in which there is little to no wasted movement. Along with a very soft load, he is able to produce more than enough power. With his plus athleticism and above average tools, to go along with a very compact build at 6’1" and 196 lbs, Mahtook has everything you look for in a top college bat.
