For now, the Mets are signing bit players like D. J. Carrasco, Ronny Paulino and Boof Bonser, letting go reliable left-handers like Hisanori Takahashi and Pedro Feliciano rather than pay them each $3 million or $4 million a year and waiting until as much as $60 million comes off the books after next season. Mack on F-Mart:
The other day, Metsblog linked to this post from Mack’s Mets on Fernando Martinez. The gist of it is that Mack feels that Martinez’ arthritis moots his status as a prospect and ruins his trade value. I think I understand where Mack is coming from here: the hype surrounding Martinez just three season ago reached such unsustainable levels (remember the “Teenage Hitting Machine”?) that a healthy Martinez would have struggled to meet them. His subsequent injuries have both hindered his development and started to create a “bust” feeling about him. I can see that, yet I think writing Martinez off as a prospect/trading chip is very shortsighted. - section518
Joaquin Arias:
The Royals designated Joaquin Arias for assignment on Sunday, according to MLB.com's transactions page. The 26-year-old utility infielder has been well-traveled of late, having been traded from the Rangers to the Mets in the August deal that sent Jeff Francoeur to Texas. The Royals then selected him off waivers in November before designating him for assignment - mlbtraderumors.
Pitching Prospects:
Pitchers Manuel Alvarez, Armando Rodriguez, Pedro Beato, Mark Cohoon – We’ve reached the first group of pitching prospects. The rest are in part two. This first group is older pitching prospects whose upside projects them as bullpen arms or fifth starters. Alvarez could help in the bullpen this year, Rodriguez had a good year as a starter in the low minors, Beato is a Rule 5 pick that could be a part of the 2011 pen, and Cohoon did a decent Mark Buehrle impersonation in High-A and Double-A this season. - patrickfloodblog
Bob Miller:
Pitcher, St. Louis Cardinals - Miller was a 1957 Bonus Baby whom the Cardinals had been bringing along prudently. Though he didn’t wow anyone, the right-hander was doing pretty well until 1961, his first full big league season, when for the first time Miller struggled with his control, and in a long reliever/spot starter role he’d been less than effective. - hardballtimes.
