Michael Lang: - SR OF Michael Lang’s scouting profile screams potential fourth outfielder. Above-average in many phases of the game (speed, arm strength, range) with consistent strong production at the plate (.378/.471/.700 – 27 BB/39 K – 11/15 SB – 230 AB), not to mention one of the finest people I’ve talked to/people who say ridiculously nice things about him ratios I’ve come across. Yes, Lang’s PITT/PWSRNTAH stat is simply off the charts. Regular readers of the site know I try to straddle that fine line when it comes to makeup – not wanting to be completely dismissive of it, not willing to use it to make blanket statements defending or denouncing any particular prospect’s ranking – but I do think it makes an interesting tie-breaker during equally talented player comparisons, especially for prospects who aren’t expected to be regulars in the big leagues. Call me naïve, but sometimes I like to think of the business of baseball like I would any other job market that exists in our world. If I had final say on draft day, I’d always stop and ask myself this very simple question: Do you feel confident hiring this man to join your company? The lanky righthander who checks in at 6’9 220 pounds is a Greensburg, Indiana, native where he attended Greensburg High School as he developed into one of the best players in the country. As a senior, he had an ERA of 0.95 and a 8-0 record in 51 innings as a senior while striking out 108 and walking 30. Collegiate Baseball Newspaper has announced its 2011 Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American teams. UCLA pitchers Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer are the only teammates to be named first team All-Americans. The duo helped leads the Bruins to a runner-up finish at the 2010 College World Series. Bauer was 12-3 with a 3.03 ERA and 165 strikeouts in 2010, while Gerrit was 11-4 with a 3.37 ERA and 153 Ks. We continue the countdown today at number 35 with Florida sophomore Austin Maddox. The Jacksonville, Florida, native attended Eagle’s View Academy where he had one of the best careers in school history. In his high school career, Maddox led the Warriors to a 19-2 playoff record, a pair of state championships and four final fours. As a high school senior, he hit .544 with 33 RBI, 23 runs, 11 doubles and nine home runs. He was named Florida Times-Union’s All-First Coast Baseball Player of the Year. C.J. Hinojosa - SS - Klein Collins HS, Spring, Texas - Hinojosa was one of the more exciting players in attendence during the six-day collection of games. A rising junior and member of the prospective 2012 draft class, he already shows advanced actions in the field, including soft hands, good reads, a strong arm and a creative flare that allows him to flash a spectacular play on occasion. He reads the ball very well off of the bat, both from short and from second, and should be able to stick up-the-middle defensively. He is surprisingly slow out of the box, making-up for some of that with average speed underway, but is far from a burner. His swing is generally on a linedrive plane, showing hard contact to the gaps but not much carry. As a potentially elite defender up-the-middle with a knack for squaring the ball, Hinojosa is among the top 2012 infielders on the circuit this year and should be a close follow over the next 18 months. http://diamondscapescouting.com/articles_2010acg_wraps_part1_11162010.html
