CL Chad Sheppard – He’s a 6-4 (isn’t everyone?)righty that signed late. Was a sophomore-eligible draftee. His go-to pich is a big one… a low-90s sinker that ends up at the low end of the strike zone and produces a high number of ground balls. How good is it? He gave up only two home runs in his last two years in college (Northwestern State). No. 2 pitch is a slider. Pefect game voted him with the best velocity in his division… he was the premier closer in his conference and should start the season off in Savannah. Nasty pitcher.
SP Steve Matz – Matz was the 1st round draft pick in 2009 and went under the knife for TJS after feeling pain last spring training. He has yet to throw his first professional pitch and it’s anyone’s guess what he has at this point. Matz never was a flame thrower and captured the attention of the old Mets brass after a successful ocal high school career. I project him starting in Brooklyn, but he could go as high as St. Lucie, depending upon what happens in spring training. (I talked with Steve arlier this week and he said he’s on schedule to be throwing in the pens in March, but I’m sure the Mets won’t rush him during ST, making by short-season debut prediction look accurate).
OF Tillman Pugh – Pugh has been mentioned on a few of the Mets prospect lists in 2010 and was as high as 8th. He had a hard time trying to decide where to go to school… graduated high school in 2007… then Arizona State, Sonoma State, followed by Gateway Community College in Arizona, and then the Amsterdam Mohawks. Right now he’s all speed and tools.
RHP Ronny Moria – Moria is a 22-yr. old sometime starter, sometime relief, pitcher the Mets picked up in the Rule V this year. His availability was a pleasant surprise… fastball gets up to 94, and also has a plus slider… but his go-to pitch is an excellent breaking ball. Prjects out as a mid-range prospect
