The 16-Under National Team has received an unprecedented three major awards from USA Baseball, based in Durham, N.C. The TCU baseball program keeps making history as it earned its first-ever No. 1 ranking. The Horned Frogs debuted in the top spot of Collegiate Baseball’s preseason rankings released Monday. TCU returns its entire starting rotation from a year ago and seven starters in the field. All three members of the rotation (Matt Purke, Steven Maxwell and Kyle Winkler) have earned preseason All-American accolades, while Jason Coats represents the hitters as a preseason All-American. We continue the countdown today at number 33 with Alabama junior outfielder Taylor Dugas. The Lafayette, Louisiana, native attended Teurlings Catholic High School where he was a four year starter for head coach Mike Thibodeaux. In his high school career, he batted .518 (176 for 340) with 19 home runs and 159 RBI. His senior season saw him hit .640 (57 for 86) with 10 home runs, 38 RBI, 55 runs, 17 doubles and four triples while being named a Collegiate Baseball High School All-American, LBCA Player of the Year, first-team All-State by the LBCA, and won the Rebel of the Year Award at TCHS. He decided to head out of state to play for the Alabama Crimson tide. His freshman campaign saw him appear in 56 games (54 starts) as he hit .352 (83-for-236) with two home runs and 27 RBI in 56 games, He was able to lead the Crimson Tide in hits (83), multi-hit games (25) and doubles (20). South Carolina LHP Wes Cook will not be a member of the baseball team in 2011 after failing to meet academic standards to be eligible for the spring semester. He was a incoming transfer from Central Alabama Junior College where he went 8-3 with a 3.49 ERA and 108 strikeouts in 111 innings last season while as a freshman went 10-0 while averaging 7.6 strikeouts per nine innings. My next top performer from the 2010 summer season is Johnny Ruettiger of the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. Johnny is currently a -2/180 pound outfielder from Arizona State University. He hails from Joliet, IL and he attended Joliet Catholic Academy. He was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 35th round of the 2008 MLB draft, but he elected to attend ASU instead. Johnny had a tremendous 2010 for the Sun Devils. He hit .351, with 4 home runs and 35 runs batted in. Michael Howard - lhp - Prescott HS, Prescott, Ariz. - Howard throws with some effort but shows a very quick arm, helping him to upper-80s velocities with his fastball. He can land on a stiff front leg, combining with a slight shoulder tug to give him some control issues from time to time. His curve is soft and slow, sitting in the low-70s and lacking consistent shape or bite. JR RHP Charlie Law is a projection pick all the way at this point. The potential for three big league average or better pitches (88-92 FB with sink, above-average CU that really impressed me when I saw him in high school, raw CB with promise) and a great frame (6-7, 235) make him one of college baseball’s most intriguing mystery men. With only 36 innings pitched through his first two seasons as a Scarlet Knight, Law has a lot to prove in 2011. I personally find his height interesting because it is one of those rare attributes that is both very clearly a positive (downward plane, some potential for more heat, better suited for durability, etc.) and a negative. I haven’t seen him since high school, so don’t take this as gospel, but his height often appeared to throw his mechanics out of sync which in turn hurt the way he commanded his fastball. - http://baseballdraftreport.com/
