FA – 57 players – $1bil:
The 54 players that have signed Major League free agent contracts so far this off-season have seen a total of $914,100,000 in total contract dollars, or an average of $16,927,778. Of those, 26 players have seen 1-year deals totaling $92,150,000 with the highest being Hiroki Kuroda of the Dodgers ($12,000,000) followed by Carlos Pena’s deal with the Cubs ($10,000,000). - bizofbaseball.
Jesus Feliciano:
Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Yankees are nearing a two-year, $8 million deal with free agent left-hander Pedro Feliciano. In a world where the Red Sox are paying Bobby Jenks $12 million over two years and the Angels are paying Scott Downs $15 million over three years, this is far from a bad get for the Yanks. Feliciano, 34, posted a 3.30 ERA over 62 2/3 innings for the Mets this past season and has held left-handed hitters to a .214/.282/.297 batting line for his career. He should do well in the Bronx. - rotoworld
Columbia Winter League:
The Colombian Winter League, sponsored mainly by Edgar Renteria held a press conference to announce the cancellation of their season, making sure to emphasize that it was not for economic reasons, but weather related. The heavy rains have created landslides and made many of the fields unplayable, so the league decided not to continue the season. The rains had also caused the cancellation of too many games, which would have required a number of doubleheaders. - myworldofbaseball.
Sam Jones:
“Toothpick Sam” had for several years been a strikeout king and a major star, but at the age of 35 in 1961 he’d clearly begun his decline. Still he looked as though he might have enough left in the tank to attract something in the trade market. -
