Vinny Cartiglia - Harvey has a nice smooth motion. Nickeas, who
is catching Harvey, says, "whoa, that's nice," after a breaking pitch
hits glove
Jonathan Hacohen - Matt
Harvey, the seventh overall pick in 2010, will likely be given a chance to
pitch for the rebuilding Mets in 2012. He initially struggled in his promotion
to AA, but dominated in the last month and a half of the season. He had a
strikeout rate of 10.9k/9 between both levels and has long-term keeper
potential that could begin to be realized in 2012.
Mike Nickeas - “He’s a
very mature kid, tremendous stuff and he’s very ambitious, he has a huge desire
to get up to the big leagues and stay there. I was impressed with his
two-seamer. I was surprised that he just started throwing it. The ball is
heavy; his fastball command, so far in camp, has been very solid. He has a
really good curve ball, a solid changeup and his slider is developing, but I
think his curve ball is fantastic.’’
Zack Wheeler (Tues) -
Good bullpen today. Next is live BP
C. Trent Rosecrans - The
team's top prospect is right-hander Zack Wheeler, acquired in the Carlos
Beltran trade, but if he sees Citi Field this season, it'll likely be near the
end of the year when the team's fate has already been decided
Sandy Alderson - In
terms of role, "we'll let him tell us". We're not going to limit him
to any one box. Nor is any decision final. Could you see him help at some point
this summer out of the bullpen? Possibly. But does that mean we'd never
consider him a starter again? Absolutely not.
Vinny Cartiglia – Familia
is a big boy. Ball really pops the mitt
David Lennon - Another successful test for Mejia, who
threw 20 pitch bullpen today and remains on schedule. "Feeling
strong" he said with a smile
Brant Rustich (Tues) - I've
thrown 5 bullpens now with today being the best. Another Friday and should be
doing live BP soon hopefully
David Lennon - Reese Havens, annually touted as future
star at 2B, being held out of workouts as he nurses stiff back
J.P. Ricciardi - •Defensively, "he's most comfortable
at second base." But that doesn't mean he can't play shortstop long-term.
Vinny Cartiglia: Flores
is big kid. Kinda looks like a young Miggy
J.P. Ricciardi - •"He's
not an outfielder"; lacks the foot speed. Definitely not going to happen
Terry Collins - “There’s
no doubt this is an important spring for him because of the situation we’re
looking at, with us in desperate need of guys who can play outfield. We’re
going to give him a lot of playing time. He’s going to get plenty of chances to
prove himself.”
C. Trent Rosecrans - Outfielder
Kirk Nieuwenhuis could contribute immediately. The 24-year-old missed the
second half of the 2011 season with a torn labrum in his non-throwing (left)
shoulder, but has been swinging the bat at full strength since last month.
Before his injury, he was hitting .298/.403/.505 with six homers in 221 plate
appearances for Triple-A Buffalo. A solid all-around player, Nieuwenhuis can
play any of the three outfield sports, but center field may be where he could
make his mark. The Mets have the 34-year-old Torres as the its starter in
center and the 31-year-old Hairston backing him up, so it's not much of a
stretch to see Nieuwenhuis get a chance sometime this season.
J.P. Ricciardi - •From
everything we've seen of him, he's a center fielder. "The center field
situation in the upper minors right now -- with Nieuwenhuis, Den Dekker (etc)
-- is going to be very interesting to watch."
