Mack - 2022 MLB Draft Scouting Report - C - Hayden Dunhurst

Hayden Dunhurst

Mack's spin -

Dunhurst was the catcher for the pitching staff of Ole Miss, which alone is a statement for his ability to play this game.

A little bit of a disappointment since being so highly touted out of High School.

May have the best college arm from behind the plate,

Projected to stick there.

I currently have him as my #3 catcher and a second round draft pick.

 10. Detroit Tigers: Hayden Dunhurst, C, Ole Miss

Dunhurst was a highly-regarded prep catcher in 2019 due to his well-rounded skills. Over the last two years, Dunhurst has only enhanced those skills, putting himself in the conversation as one of the top college prospects in the 2021 MLB draft class.

 17. Hayden Dunhurst

 Catcher, Ole Miss

College catchers who can hit and throw provide enormous value in most drafts. Simply put, Hayden Dunhurst may have the best throwing arm of any draft-eligible catcher in recent memory. Throwing an 80 grade on any defensive tool can be a tough sell, but Dunhurst’s cannon hits the mark. The arm has been clocked at 90mph by area scouts on throws to second base, with pop times hovering between 1.80 and 1.85. Truly sensational. He’s an above average receiver and blocks balls in the dirt very well thanks to solid athleticism. Dunhurst’s hit tool has been better than many anticipated as he’s been a stalwart in the heart of the Ole Miss lineup, He projects at least a fringy average hitter with average power, maybe more. It’s a thick, well-proportioned physical frame that some scouts think will add impact as he continues to grow and mature and make use of his plus raw power.

7-20-21 - TTF -

Hayden Dunhurst, C, Mississippi

In 2021, Dunhurst hit .280 with 43 RBIs and a .385 OBP. If you ask him, he won’t settle for this. Expect big things from Dunhurst in 2022. He’s got amazing work ethic and well-rounded skills that make him hard to forget about. His arm strength is elite and he has refined his hitting tool that I’m excited to see when he enters the 2022 season as one of two great catching prospects.

Dunhurst is an advanced defensive player, possessing elite arm strength and quality receiving skills. He has refined his offensive skills at the plate while at Ole Miss. He will remain behind the plate long-term.

Bio:

Height: 5-11

Weight: 208 lbs

Hits/Throws: B-R

Hometown: Carriere, Mississippi

School: Ole Miss

Dunhurst makes his money by elevating the ball at the plate. Wide, squatted stance creates good loft and exit velos that exceed his peers of his age. Good body certainly projects to stick behind the plate.

11-27-20 - PG

I absolutely love Dunhurst to the same capacity of my affinity for Patrick Bailey this past draft. Across the board he’s solid with pretty optimal data and above average power/hit. He’s probably a plus defender at the next level with a plus arm and above average receiving. Dunhurst was highly regarded out of high school in 2019 and got a second round grade from me (as did fellow 2022 eligible catcher Jonathon French). There’s an argument for Dunhurst being the top catcher in the country in 2021 with Bailey and Austin Wells now professionals, though Del Castillo is also remarkable.
