Mack - 2022 MLB Draft Scouting Report - LHP - Tristan Smith

Tristan Smith

 Mack's spin -

Smith is one of the many top southpaws in this draft.

93-95 fastball, 79-81 sharp breaker with 2200-2600 rpm range.

Prep stats:  47 1/3 innings pitched, 79 strikeouts, 1.25 WHIP

I expect over-slot money in the 2nd round to pull him away from my Tigers.

LHP      6-2     200

8-8-21 - BA  -

Tristan Smith, LHP (South Carolina)

Smith is listed at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds and throws from a three-quarter slot, with slight crossfiring action, but impressive arm speed and a balanced finish. At PG National, Smith was as locked in as you can get, firing fastballs in the 93-95 mph range from the left side, and locking batters up with a sharp breaking ball in the 79-81 mph range with two-plane bite in the 2200-2600 rpm range.

He showed tremendous feel to land the pitch in the zone for strikes. Smith’s feel for the pitch is so good that he’ll start pitching off of his breaking ball rather than his fastball at times, and that did hurt him a bit at East Coast Pro, when his fastball command lagged behind his breaking ball feel, and he looked a bit more scattered overall.

LHP Tristan Smith

There’s a reason why “This is unfair” and “I feel bad for these kids” were written down on my notes during this outing. It was the loudest outing of the week. Tristan Smith is one of the top lefties in the class for a reason and he showed why. He started off with three straight curveballs to Kaden Martin, two of them for strikes and one just off the plate. Martin, a left-handed hitter, then watched a 95 MPH fastball zip by and the rest is history. Smith struck out all six batters he faced with a lethal fastball/curveball combo that kept hitters off balance. The high-spin heater sat 92-94 MPH and touched 95 MPH with big life, but the curveball was the main star of the show. It sat 78-81 MPH and Smith landed the pitch for strikes with relative ease. Not to mention, he manipulated the shape of the pitch at will. He does have a change-up, but it was not utilized here. He’s a high follow in this class and could wind up in the first or second round come next July.

7. Tristan Smith

Left-Handed Pitcher, Boiling Springs HS

Smith is one of the top lefties in a loaded 2022 prep class. A strong 6-foot-2, 200 pound frame, Smith fits the profile of a future power pitcher with a rather effortless, crossbody delivery with plenty of deception. Smith’s fastball has been clocked as high as 96 MPH, usually sitting in the 90-94 MPH range. It’s an explosive pitch that comes out of a tough angle with high spin rates. His primary secondary is a sweepy slider that has primarily sat in the high-70’s that he commands well. Much like the fastball, his breaking ball has huge spin rates, reaching as high as 3000 RPM. He rounds out his arsenal with a change-up in the low-80’s that he has good feel for. Smith is committed to Clemson.

Tristan Smith, LHP, Boiling Springs (S.C.) HS

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound lefty throws a fastball that hits 95 mph from a cross-body and deceptive delivery that looks effortless. Smith throws a high-70s slider that serves as his outpitch. He also has a feel for a changeup. His fastball and slider have quality spin rates that analytically-driven teams will appreciate.

5-18-21 - PG -

Tristan Smith (S.C)

6-2/200 R/L

Commitment: Clemson

PG Events: 14

Key Stats: 47 1/3 innings pitched, 79 strikeouts, 1.25 WHIP

Short Story: You could argue that Smith has the best pure arm speed in the ’22 class. The stuff is simply electric, with a mid-90s fastball and power breaker. When he gets going and repeats his delivery/release it is exciting to watch him work.

Big Moment: At the 2020 16U National Elite Championship he ran his fastball up to 95 and threw both his slider and changeup in the mid-80s on his way to a five-inning, 11-strikeout performance.

Bold Prediction: Smith starts to control his loud arsenal and strings together a summer of dominance that few arms in any class are capable of matching.

 4. Tristan Smith - LHP

Bio:

Height: 6-1

Weight: 180 lbs

Hits/Throws: L-L

Hometown: Chesnee, South Carolina

School: Boiling Springs (SC)

Smith has an electric left arm that has proved its worth this summer. The fastball sat 90-94 MPH and has touched 95 MPH, exploding out of his hand with good life to it and above-average spin rates. Pairs it with a slider in the high-70's with good tilt and spin rates reaching 2,500 RPM or higher. Developing change-up in the low-80's. Deceptive delivery from a tough angle.

11-27-20 - PG -

Smith is the rear back and fire power pitcher among the top 2022 southpaws, with a strong athletic body and a blazing fastball that can reach 95 mph with more to come.  He was unhittable at major tournaments when throwing strikes in 2020, striking out 40 hitters in 20 innings but also issuing 21 walks.
