1962

In the first game of a Polo Grounds doubleheader, Don Demeter hits home runs off two different pitchers named Bob Miller. The outfielder's third-inning round-tripper off Mets' right-handed starter Robert Lane Miller and his homer in the ninth off southpaw Robert Gerald Miller contribute to the Phillies' 9-3 victory over the Amazin's.

1962

Choo Choo Coleman and Jim Hickman tie a major league record by each hitting a home run as a pinch-hitter as teammates in the same game. The Amazin' Mets still manage to lose to the Phillies, an 8-7 defeat in 13 innings at the Polo Grounds.

1965

"Now, ladies and gentlemen, honored by their country, decorated by their Queen, loved here in America, here are the Beatles!”- ED SULLIVAN, Variety show host introducing the Beatles.

With Beatlemania in full force, the Fab Four play Shea Stadium, the home of the Mets, marking the first time a rock band headlines a stadium venue. Screams drown out the band's very memorable performance in front of a sold-out crowd of 56,000 that features a 30-minute set of 12 songs.

1970

With the bases loaded and one gone in the bottom of the ninth with a 2-1 lead, Tom Seaver strikes out Bob Tillman for the apparent second out, but Jerry Grote's passed ball allows Tony Gonzalez to score the tying run for the Braves. In his effort to cut down the runner at home, the Mets catcher overthrows Seaver, who is covering the plate, bringing in Rico Carty home from third base with the winning tally giving Atlanta a stunning 3-2 victory, thanks to the two runs scored on a called third strike.

2005

Felix Hernandez becomes the first teenager to strike out at least ten batters since Dwight Gooden accomplished the feat with the 1984 Mets. The 18 year-old Mariner rookie righty K's 11 batters as the Mariners rout the Royals, 11-3.

2006

Joining Jim Hickman (1965), Dave Kingman (1978), Caudell Washington (1980), Darryl Strawberry (1985), Gary Carter (1985), and Edgardo Alfonzo (1999), Jose Reyes, in an 11-4 loss to the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, becomes the seventh Mets player to hit three homers in a game. Like all his predecessors, his trifecta takes place on the road.

2011

At Petco Park, Jason Isringhausen becomes the 23rd major league pitcher to record 300 career saves when the Mets defeat San Diego in 10 innings, 5-4. The 38 year-old right-handed closer is the third pitcher, along with John Franco (1996) and Billy Wagner (2006), to achieve his 300th save wearing a Mets uniform.

Baseball Reference:

1962 - Pinch-hit home runs by the Mets' Choo Choo Coleman (6th inning) and Jim Hickman (8th) tie the major-league record for pinch home runs by one club in one game, but the Mets still lose to the Phils, 8 - 7, in 13 innings. Winning pitcher Chris Short singles and scores the winning run. The Phils cop the opener, 9 - 3 behind a Johnny Callison homer and two by Don Demeter.

1976 - On Bud Harrelson's wedding day, he scores the only run as the Mets nip the Reds, 1 - 0. He gets married a few hours after the game.

1999: The Mets defeat the Giants, 12 - 5, behind Kenny Rogers' complete game victory. It is the first complete game of the year for the Mets, who have gone 139 consecutive games without a complete game. They fall one short of the major-league record of 140 set by the Angels earlier this season.

2001: The Mets lose their 5th straight game, falling to the Padres by a score of 2 - 1. San Diego's Trevor Hoffman gets the save, becoming the 14th pitcher in history to reach the milestone of 300 saves. He also ties John Wetteland as the second-fastest to reach the mark.

Some great minor league pitching.

There have probably been 250 no hitters since 1962 - the Mets have one tainted one. A curse there somewhere.

I just can't watch this Mets team not hit. I am sick and tired of the lack of scoring. 439 runs vs. Astros' 625. 32 runs behind the 27th best team. Wake me up when they decide to not be patsies. Remember, they have not had to face Mets pitching, or they'd be doing even worse.

Good points about about Mets hitting. They are also the worst base running team in baseball. Don't steal bases, don't take extra bases. Not sure if that is the Manager. front office, or analytics staff.

Chad Krueger has Syracuse ties for 2nd in the AAA East in stolen bases. Fonzie and Endy showed what an aggressive base running team can do in Brooklyn in 2019. Mets need to use some of that philosophy.

Through all the injuries, shortened spring training and ever changing personnel, the minor league pitching coaches have done a great job this year.
Besides Butto and Oller, they have worked hard on getting guys without high velo to pitch well - especially Gordon, Lasko, and Walker.

Good points guys and by the way our old friend Amed the Indian has 12 SB and 0 CS.

There is a common denominator from the old regime to the new. Many aspects of their approach to hitting are strikingly similar to previous lineups spanning 2017 through the present. That common denominator is Sandy Alderson. I'm not here to disparage him, but I do think it's in Mr. Cohen's and our best interest if the owner went off campus to rebuild this front office. For the moment, acquiring/signing Francisco Lindor is a stand-alone event. I'm the first to preach Rome wasn't built in a day. But I'm damn curious to see how they conduct themselves in the coming off-season.

John, the problem with players stealing is they all already get hurt as they get older. Sliding too? You need young guys for that.

I still wonder if David Wright had not been a base stealer in his first several years if he would have gotten hurt like he did.

That of course doesn't mean they shouldn't be professional base runners and not bone heads on the base paths.

Brooklyn, I think it is simple - what do the top 10 teams do right to score that the Mets do not? Then how do we migrate the team to Top 10 without spending $1 billion to do it?

Alvarez, Baty and Mauricio are hopefully 3 future pieces.
