Matthew Roberson NY Daily News: Bringing back Marcus Stroman needs to be at the top of Mets’ offseason to-do list. “Without Stroman, the Mets would be closer to the reeling Nationals and Marlins than they are to the Braves and Phillies. He’s one of just 10 qualified starters with an ERA under 3.00. His 1.12 WHIP is the best it’s been over a full season. By walk rate and opponents’ batting average, Stroman is enjoying his best campaign since he was a rookie. He’s also stepped in as the de facto ace in place of deGrom.”

Tim Healey Newsday: Noah Syndergaard expected to begin minor-league rehab this week. “His next step likely will be another live batting-practice session, which he already has done twice, most recently Saturday. If he continues to feel good after that — and all signs lately have been positive — the idea is for him to pitch in a real game with an affiliate.”

2001

In his major league debut, Rockies right-hander Jason Jennings throws a complete-game shutout, blanking the Mets at Shea Stadium, 10-0. Additionally, the 23-year-old rookie enjoys a 3-for-5 day at the plate, including a solo home run leading off the ninth inning off Donnie Wall.

2006

Carlos Delgado's 400th career home run, his second of the game, proves to be significant when his fourth-inning grand slam dramatically closes the gap in the Mets' eventual 8-7 comeback victory over the Cardinals at Shea Stadium. The bases-loaded home run is New York's ninth of the season, establishing a new club record.

2009

After making an error and a poor play allowing a batter to reach on an infield hit, Eric Bruntlett redeems himself when he turns the Mets' attempted double steal into a game-ending unassisted triple play, marking only the 14th regular-season triple-killing. The rare event occurs when the second baseman snares Jeff Francoeur's line drive for the first out, steps on second to double up Luis Castillo, and then tags the runner coming from first base, Daniel Murphy, for the last out of Phillies' 9-7 Citi Field victory.

Baseball Reference:

1964: Mets pitcher Willard Hunter picks up half his career wins (4) today as New York sweeps the Cubs, 2 - 1, in 10 innings, and 5 - 4 in the nitecap. No one has ever won a pair more efficiently as he totals 1 2/3 innings of work. Bob Buhl and Don Elston pick up losses.

1970: Don Gullett strikes out six straight batters and pitches four innings with no runners reaching base in beating the host Mets, 7 - 5. Gullett strikes out eight in the last four innings. The Reds win on Jimmy Stewart's 3-run pinch homer off Tom Seaver

1992: In his last outing as a MetDavid Cone (13-7) gives up four runs in seven innings in losing to the Padres, 4 - 3. Cone gives up just three hits. Mets Bobby Bonilla homers in his fourth consecutive game, tying the club mark.

2019 - For the second time this year, Jacob deGrom strikes out at least 13 batters and also homers in a game, limiting the Braves to 1 run over 7 innings. However, his long ball is the only offense for the Mets tonight, who go on to lose the game, 2 - 1, in 14 innings on Billy Hamilton's first hit with Atlanta. DeGrom records his 200th K of the year in the game, as New York's pitchers combine for a total of 26, tying the major league record for an extra-inning game. Before deGrom did it twice in a season, no pitcher had ever struck out 13 or more batters and homered in the same game more than once in his career. For Atlanta, Ronald Acuna becomes the second youngest player to record a 30-30 season, after Mike Trout.

Diaz brought energy - and JDD began to make a case for himself that he can actually hit with runners in scoring position.

One minors guy I feel bad for is catcher David Rodriguez - great hitting in winter ball, but starts out 1-19 in the minors this year. Over .290 since, does not fan much, decent pop, but 3 catchers in front of him (McCann, Nido, Mazeika).

Two more hits for scorching Mangum.

Stroman deserves kudos for this season.

Baez brought energy, I meant. Not sure if that was pre-coffee or auto-incorrect.

Plus - D-Rod didn't start much in AA with Nick Meyer and Hayden Senger there. D-Rod looked a little rough at 1st base when I saw him this weekend but at least they got his bat in lineup.
