3B/2B/1B, Bats Right, Throws Right; DOB 6/15/2000, 6'1", 221 lbs; Signed as a 16 year old from Venezuela in 2016.
Eligible for the 2021-22 Major League portion of the Rule 5 Draft (delayed due to the lockout). Unless added to a Major League Roster after the 2022 season, he will be a minor league free agent at the young age of 22.
Outside of Mack's Mets Tom Brennan who had him at #19, not too many have Jose Peroza as a Top 30, let alone a Top 20 prospect.
Prospects 1500.com has Jose as the #38 Prospect.
Yet, last year, Jose was tied for second in 2021 Mets Minor League RBIs with Ronny Mauricio at 64 behind only Francisco Alvarez at 70 RBIs.
In 237 minor league games total he has 142 RBIs - an RBI machine. He also walks earning a high on base percentage.
Splitting 2021 between Brooklyn and St. Lucie he hit a combined .253/.365/.421 - .786 OPS 12 HRS, 64 RBIs, 91 hits, 54 walks, 111 Ks in 428 plate appearances.
This got him named to the 2021 Low-A Southeast All-Star Team. "While with the [St. Lucie] Mets Peroza put together a slash line of .274/.404/.442. He had an impressive .847 OPS. Peroza slugged seven home runs and led the team in that category upon his promotion. He hit 15 doubles and tallied 47 RBI, which also led the team."
A strong arm, scouts rate his defense over other Mets 3B prospects. However, he had 16 errors in 60 games last year at 3B (8 in Brooklyn and 8 in St. Lucie) with better fielding numbers at 2B (2 errors in 29 games). Some have suggested a move to 1st base but his arm seems suited for 3rd.
Steve Sypa Amazing Avenue: "Peroza’s bat speed is average at best, but he is just a very strong human being and is capable of muscling pitches that he is able to hit squarely, especially to his pull side. When he makes solid contact, Peroza can hit the ball a long way, as evidenced by exit velocities regularly in the high-90s or above 100;"
Jose split 2019 between the Gulf Coast Mets and the Brooklyn Cyclones. Overall, in 49 2019 games he drove in 42 runs, 10 HR, 10 doubles, with a .263 BA, .330 OBP, .514 SLG.
My hope for Jose is that he plays the full year in 2022, gets promoted to Binghamton at some point and continues to impress with his defense, arm and RBI bat. This will make the Mets bring him back as a minor league free agent or maybe even add him to the 40 man roster.
Maybe then, people besides Tom will include him on their prospect list.

Jose Peroza had a fine season for a guy 6 months younger than Baty - now he's got to figure out how to keep doing well as he climbs. I hope he opens in AA.
The comment made by someone about average bat speed at best - I wonder what hitters do to increase that, similar to what pitchers do to increase velocity? Peroza hopefully is aware and working on that.
He's laid a lot of groundwork so far. Good RBI man, and gets on base. Next year is crucial to come out strong and improved.
I could be wrong, but he looks like he has a physique that could get chunky and slower - he has to guard against that.
Me? I think a strong Peroza year lies just ahead. And a mid-2023 or 2024 debut in the bigs.
Tom - Steve Sypa at Amazing Avenue, who had the comment about the average bat speed, said the same thing about Jose's body type.
I am not a scout or can project like one but I like what I have seen in Jose. He hits in big spots to drive in runs, hits the ball hard, and plays good defense. I think that will play at the higher levels. Hoping to see him in Binghamton sometime next year.
