29. (Compensation 1) Seattle Mariners: Yohandy Morales, 3B, Miami

Miami has had some dudes the past few years. Somehow, though, Morales’ name kept showing up. He was little known because he was in the shadows of his predecessors, but not anymore. Morales had a very impressive spring. He hit 18 homers and even led Team USA with a .400 batting average. Make no mistake, the 6’4″ hot corner is for real.

5. 3B Yohandy Morales

Yohandy Morales is another local prospect from the college ranks. He’s one of the top statistical performers in the country and had a strong summer representing Team USA’s Collegiate Summer team.

Morales is a 6’4”, 210-pound third baseman for the Miami Hurricanes. Morales has been a starter for the Canes since he enrolled in the summer of 2020.

During his Miami career, Morales has a .308/.380/.594 career slash line with 139 hits, 29 home runs, 104 RBIs, and a .974 OPS. In his sophomore season, he slashed .329/.411/.650 with eighteen homers, 59 RBIs, 34 walks, and a 1.061 OPS.

Morales is a very talented prospect who has already accomplished a lot against tough competition in the ACC. He is projectable with plenty of room to fill in his frame and has easy power with a sweet swing. He also draws comparisons to another Miami native, Manny Machado of the San Diego Padres.

33. Milwaukee Brewers

Yohandy Morales, 3B, Miami

Morales has a big-time prospect going back to his high school days and he’s really done a good job of polishing up the inconsistencies in his game while on campus. He now projects a above average power bat with an average hit tool and the potential for average speed. He’s got a strong arm and can handle third base too. The Brewers have leaned heavy toward college bats of late and Morales fits the bill.

That could be the best news heading into 2023 for the Miami Hurricanes baseball program and for Yohandy Morales, their star third baseman.

Morales, who is 6-foot-4, said he played last season at 195 pounds. But now, after an offseason of intense weight training, Morales is a muscled-up 217 pounds.

That could mean more Morales line drives, more Morales doubles, more Morales homers …

In short, more Morales mayhem.

And there was already plenty of Morales mayhem in 2022 as he hit .329, leading Miami in doubles (17), homers (18), RBI (59) and OPS (1.061).

15. Yohandy Morales, 3B, Miami – In a draft that looks to feature a good amount of contact first guys, Morales is every bit the new school all or nothing bat. He hit nearly .330 a season ago, but there is plenty of swing-and-miss in the bat, although it does have true plus raw power in it too. He was a round two type talent in 2020, but his swing has been cleaned up some and that K potential has been limited some compared to his reports three seasons ago. In the field, he is exactly what you want from a third baseman, with a big body and a plus arm. Morales will certainly turn some heads this Spring.

25. Yohandy Morales

Third Base, Miami

Morales was a popular draft name in 2020 with multiple teams having thrown money his way during the draft. He turned them down and elected to head to Miami to further his development. Morales had a very noisy swing in high school but it's quieted down considerably. He's much more direct to the ball these days without the anxious hands and feet in his load. An aggressive hitter, Morales isn't looking to walk, but he does limit his strikeouts to a reasonably healthy degree. He generates big exit velos and finds a lot of barrels, though his misses are too often dribblers on the infield. There is swing-and-miss present here too. That, however, should improve with time and reps. At his best, "YoYo" does a ton of damage to the baseball and projects as a third baseman with an average hit tool, above average power, a solid average runner and a reliable glove.

3. 3B Yohandy Morales, Miami.

Bat: R. Throw: R. 6'4", 210 lbs. Born 10/9/2001. Hometown: Miami, FL.

2022: 18 HR, .329/.411/.650, 6 SB, 60/34 K/BB in 60 games.

Yohandy Morales has been a priority follow for scouts down in South Florida for a while now. A big name in the 2020 high school class, he got off to a hot start before the COVID shutdown and pushed his name into top three rounds consideration, but ultimately stayed home to attend Miami. Morales burst onto the scene in Coral Gables by slashing .284/.343/.531 with eleven home runs as a freshman, then improved each number in his triple slash this past spring before a strong showing with the US Collegiate National Team over the summer. First and foremost, Morales stands out for his power. He's a big, lanky guy at 6'4", packing plenty of lean strength onto that frame that helps him put great leverage on the ball. Content with more of a line drive approach for now, he generates big exit velocities and can easily lift the ball out of the park when he wants to, and even his mishits can cause problems for pitchers. To this point, he has been a bit aggressive at the plate and has struck out north of 20% of the time in both of his collegiate seasons, so that will be something to watch this coming spring. If he can manage that and show more discipline in 2023, it's an easy first round bat that could end up with 55 hit, 60 power. Additionally, he's a solid athlete that has showed well at third base, making for a very well-rounded profile that will be very intriguing early in the draft. By cutting that strikeout rate just a little, he could easily pass Honeyman and Hurley on this list and be the first ACC player drafted.

15. Yohandry Morales, 3B, Miami

Morales has a big league body at 6-foot-4 and 209 pounds, and he fits the third-base profile with his plus power potential and arm strength. Though he batted .329/.411/.650 with 18 homers during the spring, he also struck out 60 times and comes with some swing-and-miss concerns.

15. White Sox: Yohandy Morales, 3B, Miami

After hitting 18 homers for Miami this past spring, Morales led Team USA by hitting .400 and slugging .600 in competition. The power from the right side for this 6-foot-4 infielder is very real.

Yohandy Morales, 3B, Miami

Morales hits for an exciting combination of average and power. The 6-foot-4, 208-pound right-handed hitter shows an ability to hit for above-average power to all fields. He is an aggressive hitter but limits his strikeouts.

Morales is agile for his size and shows quick actions defensively. He has a strong arm and profiles well at third base.

If Soto is still there....grab him.

The only way I'd change my mind, and take a hitter, is if the hitters to be drafted are far better than the available pitchers at # 32
