Wow, where do you begin to assess a front running start by the team with many cylinders simply not working as expected?
Edwin Diaz came to the Mets in a trade along with since forgotten PED king Robinson Cano. For the discounted contract of Cano with $20 million dollars coming from the Mariners the Mets gave up Anthony Swarzak (out of baseball), Gerson Bautista (last playing in the Mexican league alongside their batting champ, Cano), Jay Bruce (out of baseball), Justin Dunn (on the Reds’ long-term IL after shoulder surgery) and a name we do remember, Jared Kelenic. The now 25 year old has never quite put it together with a career .212 batting average despite showing good if not great power. Despite Cano’s buyout and Diaz’ up and down Mets career, they came out the winners of this winter of 2018 deal.
Today Diaz is looking more like the guy who arrived for the 2019 season that ended with a 5.59 ERA, a 2-7 record and just 26 saves for the guy named your closer. This year it’s a 5.79 ERA, a 1-0 record and 2 saves about 1/15th of the way through a normal pitching load. If the team is going to remain at or near the top of the division, is this performance simply a bad start or a picture of something else? The club needs to start thinking long term in the event it is the latter and decide who gets the 9th inning if not Diaz. Minter would be one option though he’s recovering health wise himself. Garrett is another option but his success seems more suited to an 8th inning role. The unexpected duo of Brazoban and Kranick are also possibilities though both would need to show consistency before being handed that kind of responsibility. Then there’s Dedniel Nunez still rehabbing in Syracuse.
The next issue for the Mets is in the infield. None of Mark Vientos, Brett Baty and Luisangel Acuna are establishing themselves in 2025, though of that trio Vientos has started laying off sure pitcher’s pitches and drawing walks. If he concentrates on the types of swings he made in 202 then repeating that level of slugging is still possible. For Acuna, he’s tap dancing on the precipice of demotion, though the fact he can back up Lindor may keep him here. The surest one near the exit door is Port St. Lucie MVP Brett Baty whose bat and glove have both deserted him much of this early season. Jeff McNeil’s return is going to force a change and right now it has a four letter word on th uniform jersey.
Center field may become a position of intended improvement. When your two players assigned there — Jose Siri and Tyrone Taylor — would both need to rally big time to catch up to the modest offensive exploits of Hayden Senger, well, that pretty much spells out the problem. Rumors have again started circulating about the ChiSox Gold Glover Luis Robert, Jr., but trading for him brings in a commitment of $15 million for 2025 and then $20 million option years for 2026 and 2027 which would require a $2 million buyout if declined. For that investment of a minimum of $17 million you would get someone who is 39 ABs for the 2025 season has a single extra base hit and no home runs to accompany his single RBI along with a .154 AVG. Would giving away solid assets for him be simply replacing a pair of non performers for another one? Yes, he did have that one All Star season in 2023 when he hit 38 HRs but hasn’t shown before or since that he can do it at that level ever again.
The rest of the starting pitchers have been doing fine with the exception of work-in-progress Clay Holmes with a 4.30 ERA mostly as the result of giving up way too many walks. Nothing appears needing to be done in terms of replacing anyone for now and even at giving up 4+ runs per game it’s enough to keep the club in ballgames.

Morning... err... evening Reese
Re: Diaz
He simply n isn't a dominant closer anymore and hasn't been since his meringue dance during the other world series in countries that still call that aqua The Gulf Of Mexico
The problem in a demotion to another role would not work in his brain
Is his opt out both a player and team thingy?
Re: Infield
I've lost confidence in Acuña being a regular going forward.
Wait Vientos out. be will be fine.
Baty should be thrown out with the bath water.
Mauricio now only playing marbles...
Things will settle here when Jeff comes back
Re: Outfield
Trade for Luis Robert
Just to say, Drew Gilbert has been hot for the last 2 games of his St Lucie rehab…double, HR, walk. It would take very little to be better than Siri.
I think when Alvarez returns, Baty or Acuna get demoted, not Senger. Senger is 4 for 18 and a lockdown defender. Baty and Acuna are 2 for 1,000,000,000.
Jeff McNeil - Mets are home next Thursday. My guess is both Alvarez andMcNeil are back by then. Two will go - Baty and Acuna? Does Baty still have options?
Luis Robert for Baty, straight up? Worth the gamble, considering Roberts excess salary is X 2 due to the tax?
They say Mauricio should be starting game action by mid-April. Is that 2025, or 2027?
My guess is McNeil will play 3 rehab games first, starting in Florida
Godot will be back before Ronny
Considering the hype we get for having a solid prospect base why can't we have better minor league teams? Winning players usually start with winning teams in the minors building from the ground up so isn't it time for that please!
The answer to this is quite simple
The other teams draft better
Let's get real. Mets are 8-4 despite relatively poor offensive production. Warmer weather should make a difference.
Mack, I would be on board with the Robert trade. I just wouldn't give up much for him. Baty and Siri and a low level minor leaguer at most. When McNeil returns Baty should be the first to go.
We might actually have to let Nimmo play some CF (God forbid) in the meantime. I think Viento's bat will pick up...eventually.
As far as Alverez, I'm just not his biggest fan. The other 2 receivers are miles better than him. And until he develops a clue at bat, I'm in no rush to bring him back. Let him spend 2 weeks at the lab
I really do hope Gilbert is at least serviceable this year.
Because of his contract, it might not take much
Most fragile young men remain that way
Trade Luis Robert for Baty, straight up. Mets get some salary relief, since Baty makes $14.25 million less.. Throw in a Mets 25-35 prospect pick if need be. Two projects that need-a change of address. Baty has 629 MLB plate appearances. .210/.274/.317. Not getting better with NYM. Adios.
I like Hayden and was very pleased that he got a MLB shot. He has made the most of it. But it is not fair to exchange Alvarez for an infielder. The Mets don't need three catchers. Hayden will not play 2B, 3B, or SS if there is a need there.
I don't mind that Diaz has had a bad outing or two. That happens to closers. You cannot point to any Mets reliever over the years that was flawless. The thing that really bothers me about Diaz is his seeming indifference to runners on base. He has done nothing visible to improve his ability to hold runners or to pick them off. So a walk is like a double - every time. To me it feels like arrogance to say, "It doesn't matter - I will strike out the next three".
I said earlier in the year that Diaz, to me, was a waste. The reasoning was that once a player gets on base, its as good as a double or triple depending on how fast the runner is. That is not a sustainable closer in my eyes.
The Mets made their bed when it comes to CF and trading for yet another glove and no bat makes no sense.
Baty is either going to get over his mental blockade and hit in the ML or get trade where he will then hit once the Mets uniform is exchanged.
Vientos will hit, eventually.
Seeing what Acuna and Baty are doing at 2B makes you appreciate McNeil more.
I wish Brett Baty could hit like Earl Battey.
If Diaz cannot consistently get to 99 or more, he may be on the descent path of Jeurys Familia.
If they actually did make this trade either Siri or Taylor would have to be part of the package.
When Alverez comes back Senger will definitely be demoted. That is why I don't think Alverez should be rushed back.
As far as Diaz, unfortunately, we are stuck with him. There is no way he opts out. When he was doing great the holding on runners didn't really come into play.
