The Herd:

You can call him Jon. Or you can call him Jonathon. Either way, Triple-A Buffalo LHP Jon Niese (Mets) has come up aces since an ugly start to his season. (That would be 0-5, 8.05 through start No. 8.) So how did he go about transforming from one of the International League's worst starters to one of its best (1.99 ERA, 45 strikeouts over past seven starts)? We caught up with the 22-year-old Niese recently (a full report is forthcoming), and he attributes the improvement to a re-dedication to the three C's: his curveball, changeup and cutter. He started once this week and turned in one of his finest minor league efforts, a five-hit, 10-whiff shutout at Rochester. He walked two and hit another batter, which helps account for the 126 pitches he threw

Queens:

The Mets will start Oliver Perez, Mike Pelfrey, Johan Santana and Livan Hernandez in the four-game series at Atlanta after the All-Star break. That means Hernandez will remain in the rotation, at least for the time being. The Braves will counter with Derek Lowe, Jair Jurrjens, Kenshin Kawakami and Javier Vazquez.

“When you hit it good here,” Wright would say later, “you’ve got to put your head down and run.”

Only the All-Star third baseman with 20 steals didn’t run as hard and as fast as he could. If Wright had done that, he would’ve been standing at third base.He would’ve managed his fourth triple if he hadn’t assumed he’d hit his sixth home run.

“It’s a big park,” Wright said.

Big enough to keep the Mets without a homer for 80 consecutive innings before Brian Schneider and Fernando Tatis finally went deep in the seventh. “That’s not a part of our game,” Wright said of home runs.

Jim Callis: Sure, provided your willing to spend on first-round talents who fall in the draft. The Mets haven't shown much willingness to do that, though.

The Chicago Cubs may become the first Major League Baseball team in 39 years to file for bankruptcy as Tribune Co. seeks to sell the franchise after months of negotiations.
Tribune sought Chapter 11 protection in December. It is contemplating a separate filing for the Cubs to expedite the team’s estimated $900 million sale to interested bidders, including Incapital LLC Chairman Tom Ricketts, according to four people familiar with the plan.
A brief Cubs bankruptcy would be a legal maneuver to clear the team from any future liability in the Tribune bankruptcy, according to two of the people familiar with the matter. Sam Zell, chief executive officer of Chicago-based Tribune, pledged the company’s interest in the Cubs as collateral when he negotiated the deal to take the publisher private in 2007, according to one of those people.
