Maybe Babies:
Tobi Stoner – SP – AAA – Excellent outing on June 29: 6.0-IP, 0-ER… though it was strange that he had 0-Ks and 3-BB… Stoner has only pitched at the AAA level and, like most pitchers, took a couple of starts to get the new surroundings down. Expect him to remain here for the rest of the 2009 season and there is an outside chance he could be moved to the Mets pen next year. He projects out as serious S(4 trade bait. Stoner is a very good pitcher with a good head on his shoulders. His bravado is a plus and makes him the kind of success he is becoming.
Eddie Kunz – RP – AAA – got killed on June 29 (1.0-IP, 5-H, 4-ER, 1-BB, 0-K) and was sat down for the next couple of days… no one took more crap than Kunz did last year, but he has very quietly made the conversion from a closer to a regular pen man. For the season, he has appeared 21 times for a very bad team and has put together a respectful 3.41 ERA. The last 10 games he’s gone 2.76. For some reason, a lot of relief pitchers have come anf gone on the express plane to Queens, but there have left Kunz alone so far this season. I consider this a good thing.
Josh Thole – C – AA – Thole was named this week to the Eastern league All-Star team. He was also put on the 15-day DL, which I’m sure won’t slow him down. Thole continues to work hard on his cathing and throwing. Like Daniel Murphy, no one questions his hitting ability, but there is no pop there and he’s still considered a marginal defensive catcher. The emergence of Omar Santos as the Mets backup catcher has slowed down the need to rush Thole. I’m sure he’ll catch the 2010 season in Buffalo.
Ike Davis – 1B – AA – Davis has slowed down a little after a tremedious first week at the AA level. He hit only .257 over the last 10 games., and his slugging percentage at this level is only .343. I don’t expect the Mets to rush him anymore this year, no matter how much the Mets need a first baseman. The Mets may address other needs in the off season and leave first base to a Nick Evans plus somebody platoon. Dvis is still on paper to take over the Mets first baseman job in 2011.
Jimmy Johnson – RP – A+ - June 29: 0.2-IP, 0-ER, 2-H, 1-K, 0-BB… Johnson had A ball down, and is having a difficult time adjusting to A+. In the last ten games, his ERA is 5.68, with 8 earned runs in 12.2 innings, and only six strikeouts. Johnson turns 24 in October and should finish the season in St. Lucie. It’s far too early to tell when, and if, he will make the parent team.
Reese Havens – SS – A+ - I’m not trying to sound sarcastic, but the only thing Havens has done consistently so far as a Met is get injured. Looks like he hurt his wrist last night and could be headed to the DL again. He only has hit .233 in the last ten games, and .228 for the season, though he does have eight home runs. I never liked this pick and wished they had converted him to a catcher at the get-go.
Robert Carson – SP – A – June 26: 7.0 IP, 0-ER, 5-H, 3-K, 3-BB, 2.39… he followed this up on July 1 with another outstanding outing: 8.0-IP, 1-ER, , 3-Ks… that’s one earned run in 15 innings. Carson’s ERA now stands at 2.27 and we may have to start considering putting him up on the full prospect list.
