STOCK - Carlos Gomez, Chad Cordero, and Brad Holt

STOCK UP: We’ve written recently about “the other” Carlos Gomez, who is the 19-year old pitching for the Mets DSL-1 team. I wrote on August 15th: - Don’t have much information on the members of the DSL teams, but there is a familiar name throwing some heat down there. Carlos Gomez, (no, not that Carlos Gomez) through 5.0 scoreless innings Saturday, giving up 0-ER, 2-H and striking out five while walking none. For the season, In 2009, as an 18-years old, Gomez pitched for the now defunct VSL-Mets ( 9-G, 17.2-IP, 0-0, 6.11, 1.58), but has really turned his game around this year for the DSL Mets: 14-G, 12-St, 7-2, 1.34, 1.14, only 43-K in 67.1-IP, 19-BB. We’ll keep a look see on him… last night, he threw another great outing: 6.0-IP, 4-H, 2-ER, 3-K, 2-WP, 2-BB. He’s young, but since it is his second season in Latin America, I would expect him to be pitching for the GCL Mets next spring.

STOCK UP: - Don’t look now, but the Mets just may be featuring next year’s closer in Buffalo this season. Everybody rolled their eyes when Omar Minaya signed another of his reclamation projects, Chad Cordero, but both Minaya and Cordero might be having the last laugh on this one. Cordero pitched another scoreless inning last night for Buffalo and his Bison stats for 2010 are now: 10-G, 1-0, 0.96, 1.18, 7-K, 4-BB, 9.1-IP. Remember, he is only 28-years old and he was one hell of a closer, with 113 saves from 2005-2007. Injuries prevented him from pitching a full season since, and he actually only had 24 appearances combined for the 2008 and 2009 season. He’s far from done and the Mets currently own him under a minor league contract. It will be interesting to see what the Mets do in the off-season, contract wise, with Cordero.

Stock Down: - SP Brad Holt pitched again Friday night for St. Lucie and didn’t fair well: 5.1-IP, 5-H, 3-ER, 6-K, 5-BB, 3-WP. Holt’s A+ stats this year are 2-7, 6.26, 1.79. These look great compared to his AA stats ( 1-5, 10.20). It’s late in the season and there shouldn’t be much movement in players anymore, so it’s safe to assume that Holt will finish this season as a rotational pitcher for Lucy. The ex-suppliment 1st rounderhas been around long enough now to have developed something other nthan his fastball, which is obviously being sat on. The three wild pitches are simply embarrassing at this point. Mets minor league pitching coach guru has said numerous times that there is nothing mechanically wrong with Holt’s delivery, so one tends to start realizing that this looks to be another wasted high round pick. I’m sure the Mets will move him to the pen next year, especially since he’s not ready for AA, and there are plenty of more successful starters in Savannah and Brooklyn that deserve their shot. Shame. I thought this was a live one.
