BINGHAMTON METS 2012 GAME NOTES
Binghamton Mets (2-3) vs.
Erie SeaWolves (2-3) RHP Collin McHugh (0-1, 3.60) vs. LHP Jay Voss (0-1, 9.64)
LAST GAME: The B-Mets stranded six runners in the first three innings and were held hitless over the final six frames in a 6-1 loss to the Erie SeaWolves last night at NYSEG Stadium. Bing-hamton threatened early against Erie starter James Avery, but failed to come through with the big hit. Avery managed to weave his way through five scoreless innings and retired the final seven he faced to earn his first win in his first season as a Tigers’ farmhand. Jared Gayhart walked four in the sixth, but managed to escape by only allowing one run. Kenny Faulk and Michael Morrison combined to toss three perfect innings to close out the Erie win. Binghamton’s final ten batters were retired in order. Bryan Pounds led the SeaWolves offense. The third baseman launched a two-run homer off B-Mets starter Mark Cohoon in the fourth and took Robert Carson deep on a solo shot in the seventh. Erie also plated a run in the sixth and three more in the ninth. Cohoon suffered his first loss.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Collin McHugh (0-1,3.60) will make his second start of the season after dropping his Opening Day start against the Akron Aeros on April 5. He al-lowed just two runs on four hits over five innings, but received no offensive support in Binghamton’s 4-0 loss. McHugh, an 18th round draft pick by the Mets in 2008, made 16 starts with Binghamton last year, going 8-2 with a 2.89 ERA. He was named the team’s Pitcher of the Year following the season.
LHP Jay Voss (0-1, 9.64) makes his second start after suffering the loss in Erie’s season opener against the Altoona Curve. The lefty from Illinois allowed five runs on eight hits, including a home run, over 4.2 innings. The SeaWolves dropped the con-test by a 7-4 score. Originally selected by the Marlins in the 8th round of the 2007 draft, Voss pitched three season in the Flor-ida system before being traded to the Tigers in exchange for LHP Nate Robertson in March 2010. This season marks his third with the SeaWolves.
TAMING THE SEAWOLVES: In three starts against the Sea-Wolves last season, B-Mets starter Collin McHugh went 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA. In 18.1 innings, he racked up 19 strike outs and allowed a batting average of just .188. McHugh capped his stellar 2011 campaign by tossing a complete-game against Erie on September 1. In the contest, McHugh allowed just one run and struck out a season-high 11.
BOOSTING UP IN A BAD WAY: Three B-Mets relievers, Edgar Ramirez, Robert Carson and Brad Holt, combined to allow four runs on eight hits over four innings last night. The game kicked Binghamton’s bullpen ERA from 1.10 to 2.66.
WRAPPING UP THE HOMESTAND: Tonight’s game marks the conclusion of Binghamton’s season-opening homestand. They return to NYSEG Stadium to host Portland on April 19th.
