Angel Cuan
Cuan
was a 2007 International free agent signing.
In
2008, he pitched for the VSL Mets, where he led the league in strikeouts (74).
He was also 10th in the league with the lowest WHIP (1.14), while
going only 1-8.
In
2009, he pitched for both Kingsport (12 games, 11 starts, 1-3, 4.83) and
Brooklyn (2 starts, 6.75). He had a total of 54-Ks in 67.2-IP.
1-1-09:
Observation: Cuan was the top prospect
out of the VSL team in 2008. I’m sure the Mets will send him stateside next
spring.
7-6-10:
- Stock Up: Cuan has found a second life this season with the Brooklyn
Cyclones. After lackluster years in 2008 and 2009, Cuan has become the dean of
the Brooklyn staff, going 1-0, 2.35, in his first four starts. This after an
0-0, 0.00 start this season with St. Lucie. Strikeouts are way down but NY-Penn
batters only have a .235 BA against him so far this season.
7-17-10:
- We wrote about Angel earlier this month, which means he’s doing some good
things in Brooklyn. Yesterday, he aced it again: 6-2-IP, 1-ER, 0-BB, 2.00… eight of his outs
were flyballs while six were strikeouts. Yearly stats to date at Brooklyn: 3-0,
2.00, 1.13, 23-K, 7-BB, 36.0-IP, .298-BABIP, 3.07-FIP.
7-27-10: - Cuan continues to cash in
on his second wind at Brooklyn. Last night, he pitched six scoreless innings,
giving up only five hits while striking out three. His all-star seasonal stats
are now: 4-0, 1.50, 1.04, .275-BABIP, 3.01-FIP. It will be interesting to see
what the Mets do with him next season. He did pitch some relief this year for St.
Lucie (0.00), but I see him as a Savannah starter next year. He’s playing this
year as a 21-year old.
7-4-11: - Angel had to wait his turn
earlier this year in Savannah. There simply were too many starting pitchers.
The 22-year old is in his 4th season as a Met and actually impressed us the
most in his first year (2008) with the VSL Mets. It’s not easy to go 1-8 and
turn in a 3.13 ERA, with 74-K in 72.0-IP. Most of this year has been spent in
the pen, but he’s turned in his second good start in a row last night. Big
stats last night: 6.0-IP, 1-ER, 7-K.
7-16-11:
- My follower “Hobie” will be thrilled to see I’m bumping Angel up again on my
“The Keepers” list. Frankly, if you go and watch him pitch, you really don’t
see anything that stands out. That being said, he just wins ballgames, whether
he’s a reliever or part of the rotation. Angel went 6.0 Friday night, giving up
one run and raising his Sand Gnats record to 8-1, 3.28. Sort of the Latin
Dillon Gee.
8-27-11: - Stock
Down – SP Angel Cuan – Cuan had his second bad outing in a row last night for
Savannah. He’s now given up 12-ERs in his last 11 innings pitched. This is a
simple case of season burn out and,
hopefully, the Gnats will shut the kid down for the rest of the season.
4-10-12 - SP
Angel Cuan – there definitely was a bunch of good Mets pitching the first week
of the season and none better than Cuan, who went: 7.0-IP, 2-H, 0-R, 4-K, 1-BB
for St. Lucie. Most of us pundits await his conversion to a reliever, yet he
just keeps pitching.
