Captain Kirk

Two games into Nieuwenhuis' career and he is already making some noise. I have to be honest, for the last two days I have completely forgotten that Andres Torres even plays for this team. (Of course, he didn't play much in spring training either, so it is probably not at all odd that he seems like an apparition.)

At any rate, those of us that have been waiting to see Nieuwie play at Citifield have been given a real treat the last couple of days. Who knows how long his hitting will continue before pitchers start making adjustments, but it may be prudent for the Mets to allow him the opportunity to go through his growing pains now. After all, it is not as if Torres has staked any real hard claim to the position. Torres also does not make the big bucks, which makes it easier to sit him (unlike someone else we all know and love).

At this point the Mets have nothing to lose by letting Nieuwenhuis start in center the rest of the year. Once Torres comes back he can assume the role of 4th outfielder, a la Endy Chavez, and Mike Baxter can go back to AAA where he definitely belongs. Seems pretty reasonable to me. I wonder if the Mets front office is contemplating the same scenario. One can only hope.
