- 1B Mike Napoli has received a Qualifying Offer from the Red Sox
- C Jarrod Saltalamacchia will not receive one.
- Braves C Brian McCann has been offered a QO.
- The Rays exercised their club option on OF David DeJesus and then immediately signed him to a new 2 year contract with a club option for 2016.
- The Detroit Tigers ARE NOT going to make QO's to 2B Omar Infante, SS Jhonny Peralta, or CL Joaquin Benoit.
- San Francisco has declined there options for SP Barry Zito, SP Ryan Vogelsong, and CF Andres Torres. Instead they pay a $7M buyout for Zito, $300k for Vogelsong, and $500k for Torres.
With the free agent market set to start in full swing at midnight tonight, the next step for the club will be to clear some 40 man roster space for prospect protection from the annual Rule 5 draft. Currently the roster is at 36 with the recent decline of Santana's 2014 club option an the team generally protects between 6 and 8 players each season so about 2-4 spots will need to be cleared.
(In my opinion this isn't as hard as it seems. We can start with the non-tendering of SS Omar Quintanilla and RP Scott Atchison. If needed the 1st outright assignment off the 40 man roster will probably be an OF since the roster currently has 8. This will be between the trio of Andrew Brown, Kirk Nieuwenheis, and Jordany Valdespin. As much as I depise Valdespin, he does have value as a UT player and could easily be the back-up middle infielder. So that leaves us with Brown and Kirk. I would choose Brown over Kirk at this point due to the fact that he's right handed and we'll already have a left-handed OF on the bench in Matt Den Dekker, who's defense is far superior to Kirk's. Sorry Captain Kirk, but your time is up.
My second cut, which Yes i think is needed, would be 3B Zach Lutz. Unfortunately for Zach, he could just never keep the injury bug away. Add that to the fact that we now have 3B/2B Wilmer Flores on the roster and Lutz services are no longer needed.)

Agree with your cuts. Like you, I also think that Valdespin has value and if the Mets ever get the player that got demoted and played with a chip on his shoulders at Vegas, the Mets may actually have their 2B of the future.
Too bad his attitude gets on the way. Brown over Capt. Kirk? yes. Brown has way more power, plays good defense and if I remember correctly also plays 1B?
Yes he does.
Kirk has no spot on the team now that Den Dekker is here.
I believe that the rule 5 draft isn't until December. No one needs to get cut just yet. There is a good possibility that the Mets will work a deal that is a multi-player trade for one. A guy like Kirk or Spin can be a trhow in and clear a spot in that manner as well.
Alderson should be focusing on what FAs he is going to sign as of midnight tonight. I expect him to be on someone's doorstep at midnight ala Loria with Jose!
While true...Only players on the 40 man roster as of November 20th are protected, so the team has about 2 weeks to make room for rule 5 eligible prospects.
Brown could be a power bat off the bench
