The Binghamton Mets struck out twelve times and fell to the Erie SeaWolves, 4-2, Friday night at NYSEG Stadium. It was their fifth consecutive loss.
Binghamton took an early lead in the first inning. Derrik Gibson lined a one-out single to right and took second when Jeff McVaney bobbled the ball. He later scored on a Dom Smith RBI double, giving Binghamton a 1-0 lead.
That lead held until the fourth, when Dean Green smacked a one-out single. He advanced to third after Austin Green singled behind him and Dominic Ficcociello walked. Green scored when McVaney lifted a sacrifice fly to right, tying the game at one.
Erie took the lead for good in the fifth. Kody Eaves doubled and moved to third on a Harold Castro sacrifice bunt. He then scored on a Tyler Pill wild pitch putting the SeaWolves on top 2-1. That advantage was extended to three on a Dean Green two-run homer in the eighth, making the score 4-1.
Binghamton managed another run in the bottom of the eighth. Gibson walked and moved to third on a Smith single. Matt Oberste drove Gibson home with a fielder’s choice grounder to cut the lead to 4-2.
Ruben Alaniz entered and got the final two outs of the eighth inning. He then worked a clean ninth to earn his first professional save.
Pill (0-2) took the loss with two runs allowed on six hits in six innings. Lucas Harrell (1-0) struck out eight B-Mets and allowed only one run in five innings to earn the win. Smith led the Binghamton offense by going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Gibson was 1-for-3 with a walk and both of the Mets runs.
The B-Mets and SeaWolves will continue the four-game series Saturday with a 1:05 scheduled first pitch. RHP Rainy Lara will make his third start for Binghamton and against RHP Cory Riordan making his fourth for Erie.
