John From Albany – Mets Breakfast Links 7/18/2020

Good Morning. Happy Birthday to JoeTorre and Robert Gsellman.  Jacob DeGrom throws a bullpen session and the Mets play the Yankees tonight.

Mets Links:

SNY.TV: Mets' Jacob deGrom won't pitch in Sunday exhibition game vs. Yankees, will throw sim game instead. “The reason is simple: The Mets want to be able to better control Jacob deGrom’s pitch count on Sunday as he continues to ramp up towards a potential Opening Day Start on July 23. That pitch count will be easier to control in a sim game experience rather than facing another team in a live exhibition game.”

SNY.TV: Mets' Jacob deGrom takes big step toward potential Opening Day start. “DeGrom, who had been dealing with back tightness, threw on the outfield grass at Citi Field on Friday morning before throwing a bullpen session.”

NY Post.com: Marcus Stroman’s spring training 2.0 struggles continue. “In his previous outing, Stroman walked the bases loaded in the first inning. In Friday’s intrasquad game, he allowed a pair of bombs, yielding three extra-base hits in three uneven innings of work while striking out four and walking one.”

SNY.TV: Mets manager Luis Rojas says Marcus Stroman was 'more consistent' in Friday's intrasquad outing. “I thought from the start of the game, [Marcus Stroman] was feeling his pitches,” Rojas said. “His pitches to Dom [Smith] were nasty. He got Dom when he blended in that cutter and threw that changeup in the dirt. He pitched really good the first time through the order.” But once that lineup turned over, both Dominic Smith and Amed Rosario got to the 29-year-old right-hander, touching him up for back-to-back homers. Rosario ripped a line-drive bullet over the wall in left, while Smith sent a deep fly over the fence in right-center.

SNY.TV: Mets' J.D. Davis hopes baseball's return gives fans 'hope' and 'comfort'. "It can bring in a lot of hope and just some comfort, some normalcy from what's going on so far. I feel that we have, not an obligation, but an opportunity to bring that to fans," J.D. Davis said. "It's America's past time, so I think it's only right to have baseball back before anything."

Mets.com: How Mets' Opening Day roster is shaping up. “The most significant change here is that Yoenis Céspedes is now a lock, after being uncertain to make the Mets’ original Opening Day roster. His heels and right ankle have progressed well enough for him to show off a bit during Summer Camp, hitting monster home runs in batting practice and even running the bases with adequacy.”

Mets.com: Anthony DiComo Notes – “The Mets are scheduled to play a pair of exhibition games against the Yankees this weekend as they ramp up for the season. Rick Porcello will start Saturday’s 7:10 p.m. ET game at Citi Field, followed by fellow right-hander Corey Oswalt at Yankee Stadium on Sunday. The exhibition "series" will give the Mets a dress rehearsal mere days before next week’s opener.”

Newsday: Yoenis Cespedes, Rick Porcello and more to watch for when Mets face Yankees in home-and-home exhibition.  Here are three things to look for this weekend: 1. Yoenis Cespedes probably will play both games; 2. Rick Porcello and Corey Oswalt will start; 3. The atmosphere will be better.

MLB LINKS:

Sports Illustrated: Why Baseball Is Losing Black America. “Consider the experience of former All-Star Preston Wilson, who recalls learning country song lyrics and practicing one-liners from 'Caddyshack,' enduring racist slurs and watching a teammate fiddle with a noose. Still wondering why the sport is losing Black players?”

MLB.com: 1 trade candidate for all 30 teams. For the Mets – Marcus Stroman – “Stroman won’t be traded if the Mets are in contention, but if New York falls behind in the NL East, anything could happen.”

MLB.com: MLB, MLBPA disclose latest COVID-19 results. The number of monitoring samples collected and tested in the past week was 10,548. 6 of these 10,548 samples, which is 0.05%, have been new positives.

ESPN.com: It's time to bring back the Cleveland Spiders (who really weren't that bad, you know). “The one historical fact about the original Spiders, the bit of trivia familiar to many fans, is that in 1899, they authored the worst record in baseball history (20-134).”

Asian Baseball:

Hiroshima 9 Yakult Swallows 2 Nori Aoki 1 for 3 (Box Score).

Nori Aoki is in LF today for the Yakult Swallows (Box Score).

NC Dinos 3 KT Wiz 3 (15 innings) Aaron Altherr 1 for 5 (Box Score).

Aaron Altherr is in CF again today for the NC Dinos (Box Score).

Mack’s Blast from the Past: Mets Minor League Report – July 18, 2014: Savannah (61-33) whacks Lexington (63-34) 5-1. Robert Gsellman (W, 8-4) was in fine form: 6.2 IP, R, 6 H, BB, 10 K. 1980
The Mets play their 3,000th game in franchise history, dropping an 8-3 decision in the nightcap of a twin bill sweep by Cincinnati at Riverfront Stadium. The Amazins have compiled a 1300-1694 (.434) record along with six ties since playing their first game in 1962.
2000
Hitting four doubles in a game, which has occurred only 37 times in the last century, is accomplished twice today. In a 12-4 drubbing of the Cubs, Royals leadoff hitter Johnny Damon accomplishes the rare feat, as does Shannon Stewart of the Blue Jays in an 11-7 loss to the Mets at the Skydome as C Mike Piazza hits his 3rd grand slam of the season.

2008
In the last concert hosted at Shea Stadium, Billy Joel gets a little help from his friends as Paul McCartney joins him on stage and sings "I Saw Her Standing There," to a tremendous ovation from the sold-out crowd of 55,000 stunned fans. 'Sir Paul' tells the crowd the Beatles had a 'blast' playing at Shea that night in 1965, the year after the Mets home ballpark opened.

1964: Ken BoyerBill White and Tim McCarver of the Cards hit consecutive 8th-inning home runs in a 15 - 7 bombing of the Mets.

2001: The Mets down Florida, 4 - 3, in 11 innings and see Marlins manager Tony Perez ejected for arguing a call. It is his first ejection in 31 seasons and more than 3,800 games as a player and manager.

2011: Clay Hensley is the winner in his first start since 2008 as he beats the Mets, 4 - 1, allowing only one hit over five innings. Mike Stanton drives in two runs for the Marlins, who move to within a half game of catching the Mets and escaping the NL East cellar. It is the Fish's 9th win in their last 10 games and they are now 15-9 since Jack McKeon took over as their manager.

It is amazing that articles are NOW being written about how blacks have turned theor backs to baseball when they did this decades ago.

Always loved Preston and Mookie. When the Rockies released him in 2006, the Mets should have grabbed him Instead he goes to the Cardinals and helps them with the WS. The Mets went and traded for Shawn Greene instead. Greene gave the Mets about a .750 OPS while Preston gave the Cards a .550 OPS in 2006. Just thought it was bad karma having Mookie sitting on the Cardinal sidelines. Think they could have used bother after they traded Nady.
