Mack - Weekly Draft Notes

I began this past week adding two scouting report posts a day. They feature individual players eligible for the draft and will post up at 9am and 11pm each day.

Hope you enjoy them and I welcome your comments on the posts.

Regarding the current top 10 consensus rankings, by position, in the 2021 draft, we move on to outfielders

2021 is a very talented outfield draft, especially at center.

I include all three field positions here… LF, CF, RF.

The top 10 in the current average of the last eight mock drafts is:

1. Jud Fabian Florida

2. Ethan Wilson South Alabama

3. Braylon Bishop Texarkana HS

4. Colton Cowser Sam Houston State

5. Robby Martin Florida State

6. Tyree Reed American Canyon HS

7. Benny Montgomery Red Land HS

8. Sal Frelick Boston College

9. Levi Usher Louisville

10.  Tanner Tredaway Oklahoma

Yes, it's going to be a very contentious offseason in baseball when it comes to free agency. What struck me is baseball's current CBA is ill-equipped compared to other US sports CBA's to handle a pandemic

Shooter Hunt -  @ShooterHunt

Really liked the way ‘21 OF/SS Jace Avina (NV) swung the bat in his rounds. Direct path w/ plenty of bat speed thanks to quick hands

Lots of loud contact. Definitely opened some eyes in front of 50 MLB scouts. 6.72-runner

Some of the biggest power on the day came from ‘21 1B/OF Jacob Walsh (NV). Lots of 100+ exits & home runs to pull side. Minimal effort thru contact w/ present ability to lift.

Impressive outing from ‘21 RHP Tanner McDougal (NV) who pumped 91-94 (2390-2598) w/ tight mid 70s slurve (2800+) & feel for firm 86-88 chng for strikes. 6’5 200 frame still shows more signs of filling out. Loose/quick arm w/ athleticism

Some big fire coming from ‘21 RHP Chris Cortez (NV) today. Arizona Baseball recruit is pumping 93-96 (2250-2400). Short, quick arm that jumps. Good athlete who also ran a 6.6

Jon Rothstein - @JonRothstein

2021 prospect Kaleb Washington has committed to Dayton, per his Twitter page. That's now two Top-50 prospects for the Flyers in the last week

Ian Smith - @FlaSmitty

Some more #JUCO and College of Central Florida love

LHP Mason Ronan was extra filthy this past weekend at the MLB Florida regional scouting event in Clearwater. Utilized the FB up in the zone at 92-94, and mixed in the plus high spin CB frequently for whiffs

What would have been fascinating would have been to see descriptions like these about 1966 prospects, followed by these the next year. People would have been wondering what caused to huge leap in flamethrowers.

I also wonder sometimes, with all the current emphasis on velocity, if there had been a similar focus on and training regarding velocity in the mid 60s, how much harder those dudes might have thrown.

Buckets full of talent in this coming draft.

Great Sunday reading. Like the daily scouting reports as well.

Glad to see lots of CF's this this year's draft.

Like I have said... this is a very talented draft, especially for right handed starters, center fielders, and catchers.

Drafts are made usually in the first three rounds.

We may lose one this year while possibly gaining another.

Our lower level depth is pretty complete now so we don't have to target players by position... especially center after drafting two great ones last year in Crow-Armstrong and Greene.

Still...

Is there any news on where Crow-Armstrong and Greene would have placed in this ranking?

Thanks for all the great work Mack.

Well... of they hadn't signed, they would be freshmen in college and not eligible until the 2024 draft.

If I rank them now against the incoming outfielders, I have both in the top 5 just like they were last year.

Did I answer this correctly?

Thank you Mack, it’s perfect. Just wanted to measure how they are perceived against this year’s eligibles.
