born in Refugio,
Texas. Ryan will make his major league debut in 1966 with
the New York Mets, kicking off a major league
record 27-year career. He will win 324 games with the Mets, California Angels, Houston Astros, and Texas Rangers.
1962 - The Mets sign former slugger Ralph Kiner, who joins Lindsey Nelson and Bob Murphy in the announcing booth.
1969:
The National Association approves the use of
the Designated Hitter for the International, Eastern, Texas and New York-Pennsylvania leagues. The rules vary
slightly for each league. The Texas League will be the first to use the DH, in
April.
· The American and National leagues agree to try an experimental rule change in spring training using a designated pinch hitter, but they don't agree on the implementation. The AL tells the teams to use the DPH when they are the home team; the NL gives the home manager the choice of which rules to use, but the visiting manager has to agree. The Mets, Giants, and Cardinals say that they will not use the rules, and the Astros and Reds follow suit.

Hard to believe Nolan Ryan debuted 55 years ago.
Syndergaard already looks ready. 10 months and a week since his surgery. "Focused" is an understatement.
Carlos Cortes hit "a monster" HR. and it looked that way. His bat looks good - hopefully his D is progressing well too.
You know, it would be a bummer to be a “not so good” MLB player. Just think how much better than most of us Josh Thole was, but he kind of... well.., sucked, as compared to other MLB catchers, LOL! But even that suck is way better than we could ever do!
Every time I drive to Houston and have to pass through Refugio, I see that “Birthplace of Nolan Ryan” sign and feel a little sick. After about fifty or so roundtrips, I still can’t look at that sign for more than a glance. Ryan for Fergosi.... F’ing idiots. Joan Payson didn’t want to pay the insurance...
Gus - first I am hearing about the Joan Payson connection to the Ryan trade. I thought that was all on GM Bob Scheffing. Swoboda recently said that he thought Ryan never seemed comfortable in NY and that he needed to go elsewhere to excel. I know Whitey Herzog said years later that he told Scheffing that it was a bad trade when he heard Leroy Stanton was involved - and that was before he know Ryan was involved.
I come into Houston via Galveston when I am in Texas. Really like how the Astros park is set up and how it works in the neighborhood. Hope to be able to head back soon.
I pose the Ryan question ("Ryan never seemed comfortable in NY?") regarding the Mets franchise in general in an upcoming article. I offer no answers, but am looking for readers to weigh in.
Tom - Carlos got time in the outfield last night. He has also played 1B with the majority of time at 2B. Saw him a lot at 2B in 2018 with Brooklyn. Hope to see him in person this Summer with Binghamton.
John, I have seen two games at Minute Maid, both very fun events. One was against the Red Sox on July 4 weekend right behind the Red Sox dugout. The place was flooded with Bostonians in for the weekend and all of them were at the game. The Red Sox won and the stadium played “Sweet Caroline” in polite friendliness, because we’re Texans.... well, as I drove back to the hotel the callers on the postgame show were going nuts!!! ‘How do you cater to the visiting team’!! I was laughing, thought they were funny.
I love how the stadium blends into the downtown buildings around it like other stadiums do. It gives it an embracing feel as if part of downtown, rather than a strand alone structure.
We had (until the recent contraction) a Houston farm team here in Albany, They played "Deep in the Heart of Texas" as part of the 7 inning stretch just like they do in Minute maid.
Everything about the Minute Miad set up is great. From the parking to the ticket booths, the crowd, etc.
I saw two Astros - Yankees games my last visit. Sat next to fans in full Yankee gear. No one paid them any disrespect.
