2021 MLB Draft - Mets Pick 2.46 - RHP - Calvin Zeigler - UPDATE - New Info + Mack's Spin

Calvin Ziegler

RHP          6-0         195          St. Mary’s HS (ONT)

Mack's spin -

So... the highlight on what is being written about him is that his stuff "isn't half bad" and Baseball America ranked him as the 268th prospect in this draft.

Picked 46th... evaluated 268th.

I don't care what Mets executive said that the top ten picks would all be at slot or over. This one won't.

I don't see it.

Command is Ziegler's biggest issue, something the 18-year-old said he's heard as well.

That, along with throwing more strikes and showing some consistency with off-speed pitches.

His stuff right now isn't half bad though.

Lots of strength with a mid to upper 90s fastball --- the scouting report indicates Ziegler tops out at about 97 mph, but he said he's reached 99 mph with it --- along with a curveball and a "kind of in the works, but still is a pretty good" change up.

7-14-21 - the record -

The Mets signed Rocker, a Vanderbilt pitcher selected with the 10th pick of the draft, to a contract on Tuesday that includes a $6 million US signing bonus. Rocker’s deal was first reported by MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.

“That’s obviously a really, really good starting point for me,” said Ziegler of his signing bonus. “That’s all it is, though, because my goal is to become a major-league baseball player.”

Ziegler had previously committed to play NCAA Division 1 baseball at Auburn University but said he was upfront with that school from the start and said that he would follow his heart and play professionally if the draft unfolded as he hoped it would.

Ziegler was ranked 268th on Baseball America’s top-500 prospect list

Some mlb draft news to drop: Canadian RHP Calvin Ziegler will be attending @TNXL_Baseball this spring in Florida starting in March. A way for Ziegler to get a lot of looks where there’s a lot of baseball being played

Ziegler has some of the loudest pitch data in the prep class. Extremely loud breaking ball. Needs to throws strikes. Playing Florida will help

# 194

Calvin Ziegler

St. Mary's HS, Kitchener, Ont. RHP

Ht: 6-2 | Wt: 210 | B-T: R-R

Commit/Drafted: Auburn

Age At Draft: 18.8

Ziegler ranked No. 417 on the BA 500 in the 2020 draft and many scouts expected him to have a chance at getting selected if there were more than five rounds. Now eligible again for the 2021 draft, Ziegler has taken a big jump forward this summer in a short amount of time. After topping out around 93 last year, the 6-foot-2, 210-pound righthander has gotten his fastball up to the 95-97 mph range at his best and now sits in the 90-93 mph range. Previously a slider-heavy pitcher, Ziegler has also flashed a better breaking ball that has more top-to-bottom shape than sweepy, horizontal movement. His strike throwing is still a bit of a question mark moving forward, but scouts believe he’s improved significantly in that regard and looks more in control and confident on the mound than he previously was. Ziegler would have been young for the 2020 class but is now more of an age-appropriate 2021 prospect who seems to have taken advantage of his additional year of eligibility. He’s committed to Connecticut but should get plenty of interest in the four-to-six-round range with this uptick in stuff and feel.

Q - Some high school players not on the Top 100 that could climb up boards?

Jonathan Mayo: From my areas (Jim Callis and I split up the country), SS Davis Diaz and C Charlie Saum in California; C/RHP Jackson Baumeister and 1B Jac Caglianone in Florida; Calvin Ziegler, RHP in Canada, to name a few.

236. Calvin Ziegler - RHP

Bio:

Height: 6-0

Weight: 185 lbs

Hits/Throws: R-R

Hometown: Hiedelberg, ON

School: St. Marys

Extremely loud stuff. 93-95 with big spin and a firm slider. Deception and arm speed in the profile. Command has been an issue in the past. Mechanics and timing on the arm need to be cleaned up a bit, but Ziegler has substantial upside.

11-7-2020 - PG -

Calvin Ziegler (2021 Heidelberg, ON) was nails in his first Perfect Game event this fall. He sat in the 93-95 mph range with a sharp slider in the low-80s. His fastball shows sink and typically missed barrels even if that was soft contact. He showed the characteristics to be a solid workhorse starter.

PG -

Calvin Ziegler, RHP, Ohio Warhawks

Ziegler reclassified to the 2021 class from the 2020 class following the pandemic and the events he’s been at over the course of the year show a fairly loud profile. Ziegler is a polished righthander with a mid-90s fastball and three pitches that he can throw for strikes highlighted by a slider that looks to be his future out-pitch.

MLB -

Calvin Ziegler, RHP, St. Mary’s (Ont.) – The top Canadian in the class tossed a perfect inning, striking out two, with a fastball that touched 95 mph, a mid-80s changeup and a low-80s slider. He has a strong, compact body and will head to Auburn if the Draft doesn’t go his way.

I've never heard pitching described as "loud" before, bit as long as it's effective I can live with it.

Doesn't sound like "can't miss" and was estimated to be 4th or 5th rounder.

Did the Mets jump the gun?

Mack what are your thoughts?
I was hoping for some one different.
I really wanted Pacheco to fall but
Wood, or Hajjar would have been my hopes...

Are they trying to go under slot here to free up money for Rocker?

Zozo said...

They must be

Would have like the lefty…

Definitely looks like an under-slot pick to balance Rocker. One of my scout contacts said this was a really good pick because he is extremely predictable with excellent upside and with some patients they think the Mets can develop him into a pitcher similar to Stroman.

David Rubin said...

Protectable not predictable
