Davis could return before All-Star break. “During Game 2 of a July 4 doubleheader against the Yankees, Mets manager Luis Rojas told ESPN that Davis could make a return before the All-Star break -- potentially targeting a four-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates from July 8-11.”  

SNY.TV: Corey Oswalt pitches way into Mets' fifth starter conversation: Rojas was asked about Oswalt's potential as a starter in the Mets rotation and answered honestly."He could be right now," Rojas said of Oswalt (1-1, 3.48 ERA). "We have different guys that we can talk about and definitely Corey is one of them. He's got the poise. He's got some experience now. New York Mets signed free agent Cleon Jones on July 5, 1962.

New York Mets claimed Chris Schwinden on waivers from the New York Yankees on July 5, 2012.

1962

The Mets sign 19-year-old outfielder Cleon Jones for $1,000, but the football and baseball collegian standout returns to Alabama A&M due to the lateness of the signing in the season. The Mets Hall of Famer, who spent a dozen seasons in New York, including the World Champion team, retires after playing for the White Sox in 1976.

1987

In a seven-player trade, the Giants swap southpaws Keith Comstock and Mark Davis, right-hander Mark Grant, and third baseman Chris Brown to the Padres for infielder/outfielder Kevin Mitchell and left-handers Dave Dravecky and Craig Lefferts. Mitchell, obtained by San Diego in an off-season blockbuster trade with the Mets, will be the NL's Most Valuable Player in 1989, helping the Giants to capture the circuit's pennant.

 

2000

Mets' right-handed reliever Eric Cammack triples in his only major league at-bat, joining Charlie Lindstrom (1958), Eduardo Rodriguez (1973), and Scott Munninghoff (1980) as the only players to accomplish this unlikely feat. The 24 year-old Nederland, Texas native, who will appear in only eight big-league games, all with the Amazins', legs out his three-bagger off Ron Mahay in the top of the ninth inning during the team's 11-2 loss to the Marlins at Pro Player Stadium.

2014

The Brooklyn Cyclones, attracting a sellout crowd of 8,241 fans at MCU Park in Coney Island, celebrate the 25th anniversary of the debut of Seinfeld, an iconic sitcom about nothing that initially ran for nine seasons on NBC, from 1989 to 1998. The tribute to the iconic television series includes players taking batting practice in puffy pirate shirts, a low-talker announcer, a 'Magic Loogie' bobblehead of Keith Hernandez giveaway, and renaming the foul poles the Festivus poles.

Baseball Reference:

1963 - With 2 outs and 2 strikes, Pirates right fielder Roberto Clemente lines a tie-breaking 2-run homer into the right field upper deck at the Polo Grounds, putting Pittsburgh ahead to stay, 3 - 1, against the New York Mets. While the shot is not a tape-measure one, it is remarkable that the pitch almost hit Clemente in the head. Maury Allen reports it thus: "'I was trying to waste a pitch', Tracy Stallard said. 'I figured if maybe I could get him to swing again at a pitch around his head.' So Stallard threw a real pitch to Clemente, the kind any human being hitter would duck away from and scream for the umpire. Naturally, Clemente hit it upstairs."

2010: Joey Votto, in competition for the last spot on the National League All-Star team, hits two solo home runs in the Reds' 8 - 6 win over the Mets. The game features the ejection of Mets manager Jerry Manuel, who complains over a ruling that Scott Rolen is hit by a Mike Pelfrey pitch with the bases loaded in the 5th, scoring the go-ahead run. Manuel argues that the ball tipped Rolen's bat, but is tossed when he tries to press his case. Drew Stubbs and Corky Miller follow with two-run hits each, then pitcher Travis Wood hits a triple to make it 7 - 1. The Mets counter with 5 runs of their own in the bottom of the frame, but never manage to catch up.

2011: It took a while, but Jason Bay is finally giving the Mets the production they have been waiting for since they signed him to a large contract before the 2010 season. Today, he hits two homers and drives in 4 runs as New York shuts out the Dodgers, 6 - 0, giving him a .347 average and 17 RBI in his last 18 games. Mike Pelfrey is the winner over Ted Lilly, with the help of three relievers.

Is it fair to say that Vientos isn’t the #8 prospect anymore? In fact, I’d say the top five right now are Alvarez, Baty, Allen, Vientos, then maybe Mauricio, maybe Khalil Lee, maybe Crow-Armstrong? Mauricio really needs to go to the outfield already.

Wish the Mets would stop talking shit and just play… this “nothing can stop us” stuff doesn’t need to be bulletin board material. Let their play do the talking.

Guillorme really isn’t a regular. There is just no pop in that bat. He can fill in and battle a pitcher, but he has been exposed. So has Billy McKinney who can’t pickup pitches quickly enough. He could turn on anyone’s heat, but he fishes too much. Also, please no more Mazeika. I was wrong, I confess, but ram him down my throat any more, find a decent emergency reserve.

Keith Hernandez made a point about how Jeff McNeil kind of hits like Ichiro where he looks to run to first as he’s making contact. I don’t recall him being like this in the past. Wonder if any of our plethora of hitting gurus has pointed this out to him.

Great points as always Gus.

Vientos played LF last night. Not sure if the Mets want him there full time or if they ate just trying to make him more diversified.

I am still on team Mazeika and Guillorme. I see Mazeika can be a 3rd string catcher and lefty off bench while Guillorme has an amazing glove. I see Guillorme as a guy you can plug in multiple places. Everyday player? Probably agree with you there. At best a platoon player.

That runs scored at 80 games in 2019...88 more than what has been scored so far this year...shows the core on this team can score if they bat to regular levels.

John, except Pete and Jeff in 2019 were hitting like mad. But this team can be strong on offense if all 8 cylinders are firing. This weekend showed glimpses, and JDD seems to be swinging well.

Vientos had that awful, adjusting to AA, season start, when he was hitting .188 on May 25. But looks amazing since. He should be in 2022 plans.

Ohtani is just so impressive. Another gargantuan shot. Measured at 459 to dead center…sorry, that one would have been out in old Yankee Stadium.

I think what Gus is trying to say is that for all the things Luis G does well, that one RBI in 94 plate appearances isn’t one of them. Compare that one RBI to Ohtani 31 HRs.

John, I was going to write about Mazeika too, but since there really isn’t another catcher around,I let him go. He better start lifting some weights. He looks like he needs to hit twice to reach the wall, also.

Gus, every time I see an Ohtani HR clip, they are either laser shots or majestic bombs like Darryl occasionally hit. He is a hitting freak.

Oswald deserved better. That Urshela HR was off a hard FB that was very high out of the zone (top of shoulders) and somewhat outside.

Urshela gets a tip of cap.

Boy, easy to hit HRs there.
