Mets.com: Mets rained out, to play 10th DH on Sat. New York becomes 1st team since 1978 to play double-digit twin bills before All-Star break. The Mets plan to push Thursday’s starting pitcher, Taijuan Walker, back one day to start on Friday. Marcus Stroman will also move back a day to start Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader, followed by Tylor Megill in the nightcap. The Mets still haven’t decided who will pitch on Sunday; it could be Jacob deGrom, if he feels up to coming back on short rest.

Tim Healey NewsdayBrandon Nimmo was out of the Mets’ lineup Thursday against the Pirates — in a game postponed due to rain — because of a sore left shoulder. The Mets do not believe it to be a serious issue, and he would have been available off the bench had the game happened, manager Luis Rojas said. But it was enough to keep Nimmo sidelined for what would have been a second game in a row, after he sat out for most of nightcap in the Mets’ doubleheader against the Brewers on Wednesday.

He has some of the best stuff there is in baseball so he has done really well, extremely well. He has done a lot of things very well, but I have very high hopes and high expectations for him.”

Phil Mushnick NY Post: Rob Manfred robbing MLB’s fans with clueless rule. “Monday, like tuna in Subway tuna sandwiches, something was missing. It was, in these parts, a gorgeous day. And it was July 5, a national holiday. Yet there was just one MLB afternoon game scheduled (Cardinals at Giants, a 3:05 p.m. local start).”

1964

Frank Thomas, pinch-hitting for Roy McMillan, strokes a two-out, two-run homer off Curt Simmons, giving the Mets a 4–3 victory over the Cardinals at Shea Stadium. The round-tripper comes in the outfielder’s first at-bat in five weeks, due to being sidelined by a glandular infection.

1969

Tom Seaver's near-perfect game, immortalized as "The Imperfect Game," is broken up when Cubs' rookie outfielder Jim Qualls, a lifetime .223 hitter who will finish his career with only 31 hits, singles into center field. The 24 year-old right-hander, who tosses a five one-hitters for the Mets, will finally get his no-no in 1978 against St. Louis pitching for the Reds. You Tube:

1972

Striking out three Red Sox batters in the second inning en route to a 16 K complete game performance against Boston, Nolan Ryan becomes the third pitcher in baseball history to have struck out the side on nine pitches twice during his career. The Angels fireballer, who first did it with the Mets in 1968, joins Lefty Grove (twice in 1938) and Sandy Koufax (1962 and 1964) as the other hurlers who have accomplished the feat.

1973

Interrupting Board Chairman M. Donald Grant's pep talk during a team meeting, Mets reliever Tug McGraw shouts out the words, "Ya Gotta Believe," which will become the rallying cry for the club, climbing out of the cellar en route to the NL pennant. Although New York beats Houston, 2-1, in 12 innings, their closer's words of encouragement will not immediately light a fire under the team, as they will continue to struggle until the middle of August.

Baseball Reference:

1970: On the first anniversary of his near-perfect game, Tom Seaver hits his first major league home run off Rich Nye of the Expos. Seaver goes on to pitch a complete game three-hitter for a 7 - 1 Mets win at Shea Stadium.

1988: Nolan Ryan wins his 100th game as an Astro, 6 - 3 over the Mets, and becomes the 7th pitcher in major league history to win 100 for two different clubs. Ryan won 138 games for the California Angels in the 1970s.

1998: Benny AgbayaniNorfolk Tides outfielder about to be called up to the Mets, is married at home plate to his fiancee Neila before the Triple-A All-Star Game between the International and Pacific Coast Leagues. Agbayani, from Hawaii, and his bride wear Hawaiian shirts and have a receiving line of bat-toting ballplayers. The IL whips the PCL, 8 - 4.

2000: The Yankees lose to Mike Hampton and the Mets, 2 - 0. Armando Benitez closes for the Mets, while Andy Pettitte is the loser. The Yanks also lose Shane Spencer, who blows out his knee and ends his season. The game at Shea Stadium draws 54,283, the largest regular season crowd for the Mets since 1970.

Wow - down 8-0 to Scherzer, reliever Daniel Camarena hits a grand slam on a FB on the low inside corner. 8-4 just like that, and San Diego wins it, 9-8. A miracle for the Mets.

10th doubleheader? I read this: The 1962 Mets played 30 doubleheaders—winning three. The 1965 season saw the Mets go until August before they had a week where they did NOT play a doubleheader.

Vientos and Cortes? 371 combined ABs, 34 doubles, 22 HRs, 75 RBIs. Them's some good hitting, Paw, especially as both started the season cold.

I started to wonder about Tony Dibs. Gosh, he won't pitch again until 2023??? Sucks. Prayers for a speedy and full recovery.

Tom - The record for the most doubleheaders played by a team in a season is 44 by the Chicago White Sox in 1943. Between September 4 and September 15, 1928, the Boston Braves played nine consecutive doubleheaders – 18 games in 12 days!

I think we will see Vientos and Cortes in Syracuse real soon.

Those are some amazing doubleheader records.

If we can stop the major league rehabs in Syracuse for a while, there is ample room for both Vientos and Cortes there. The good thing this year is after the ASB there are more games left due to the shifted schedule, so they'll both get more AAA time in. And, after all, Jose Peroza is ready for AA, too, as is Mauricio. And Baty. Alvarez will be tougher as the AA/AAA catching situation is crowded with decent guys.

On the ending contract article thing today.

Not a lot there really on that list.

If everyone on that list was put on the same one team, it would be below the .500% mark come year end I think. Maybe SP Corey Kluber for the remainder of the season, despite his nearing antiquity. But if the NYY lost him via a trade now, then they would have no starting pitching at all really. So I doubt that they would do that. The NYY actually needs two top-end starters added to their rotation at the trade deadline, to ever compete within their own division even the rest of the way.

Matt Harvey is 3-10 on the season I believe, with like an 8.00 ERA. A Bronx Zoo custodian could probably pitch as well with a little practice first. Will (someone kind hearted enough) please tell Matt that his baseball career ended like five seasons ago and that his better move might be to get to Hollywood like real soon. I heard Adam West's kid is digging in for the next Batman movie, so hurry it up Matt already.

Asdrubal Cabrera? No thank you. Gesundheit!

The Mets would probably benefit more by obtaining a starter that could actually make a difference on this team for the 2021 playoff run.

Houston has a nice solid and interesting rotation I have noticed, and a good won/loss record to match. Even with the Mets injuries still lurking about with Noah Syndergaard and Carlos Carrasco, the Mets are right there with them. The Mets just need one more bonafide top-end starter with an ending 2021 contract, and a good stats sheet more to ensure their 2021 playoff rotation. They shouldn't gamble on Carrasco or Syndergaard being 100% or staying healthy the rest of the way once back. It would be nice, but this is the NY Mets. Right?
