The Mariners have not used their first round pick on a high school player since taking Alex Jackson with the No. 6 pick in 2014, and I see no reason to think they'll zig this year after zagging for so long. College player it is. Bachman is one of the hardest throwers in the draft class (he has touched 102 mph this spring) and his slider is a vicious put-away pitch. There's reliever risk here because his control isn't great, but it's potential frontline stuff, and that's hard to pass up 12 picks into the draft.

The Nationals prefer quality college pitchers with big-time stuff and potential. Bachman fits that exactly. He throws a triple-digit fastball and has a huge ceiling. He also comes with some reliever risk, however.

If Bachman were 6-foot-4, he’d probably be a Top 5 selection. Instead, his evaluations are a somewhat mixed bag. He wouldn’t be the first shorter, smaller-school, collegiate pitcher to fall on draft day (Shane McClanahan), but I don’t think he makes it to the Dodgers’ pick at 29. If he does, they should sprint to the podium to turn in the pick. He’d be plenty signable if the Dodgers were to take him at the end of the first round.

There is reliever risk here, but he has the stuff to start and even if he didn’t, getting a guy who throws 100 mph with a ridiculous slider and having him close out games isn’t too bad, either.

Bachman can hit 100 mph with his fastball and flash a top-of-the-scale slider and at least a solid changeup, so he could go higher to a team that fully buys into him as a starter.

Bachman very likely brings the best 3-pitch mix to the table in the class. With the FB grading as Double-plus regularly touching mid to upper 90s having touched 101. Comes from that low slot riding up in the zone and showing ability to locate it fairly consistently. The secondaries are equally as impressive. A Slider 85-87 T89 MPH with tight late action, with gyro tendencies and a hard fading Changeup each grading as easy Plus offerings. A strong starters build to go with that 3 pitch mix all that have clear swing and miss potential. Has shown strong improvements with his command/control from struggles he showed during his Freshman year. Similar to Max Scherzer.

We dug into Bachman’s most recent start in detail during last week’s stock watch, but the 6-foot-1, 235-pound righty didn’t pitch last weekend due to arm soreness. That is certainly not helping his stock, but what he’s shown in two starts is extremely loud.

 

His velocity is up considerably from what he showed in 2020, with a fastball that’s averaged around 96 mph and been up to 100 at its best and a slider in the mid-to-upper 80s now after being a low-80s pitch through four games in 2020. Some evaluators have given Bachman a pair of 70-grade offerings between the fastball and slider, and that pure stuff would put him solidly in the first round.

 

The health of his arm will be a large factor for him moving forward, and there is a bit of effort in his delivery that could concern teams. Still, if he returns to the mound and keeps doing what he did against Jacksonville (5 IP, 6 K) and Florida International (6 IP, 10 K) there’s no reason he shouldn’t fit in with the top college pitchers in the class.

No video, but scout on-site tells me Miami (Ohio) RHP Sam Bachman was 94-96 today and touched 97 four times. Slider had good depth and induced a lot of swing-and-miss. Threw a handful of change-ups.

Bachman has good stuff: a low-to-mid-90s sinker (that clocked higher over the winter), a fine slider, and so on. He showed improved control last season, too, even if it was in a small sample. That's important because the biggest problem facing him is his delivery. He has a Q-tip arm action that would seem unlikely to withstand a starter's workload. Perhaps Bachman proves to be an exception (Freddy Garcia kept his arm up longer than an overly accountable pick-up player, and he made 357 starts), but teams are going to be skeptical until there's evidence it will work.

Cincinnati stays local with this pick, as Bachman resides 45 minutes away from GABP. Regardless, Bachman has made one of the biggest jumps in this class this fall, and loud data Cincinnati is sure to drool over. The fastball has touched 99 MPH this fall, more comfortably sitting 93-96. There's a gyro-heavy, mid-80's slider that tunnels well with the fastball and a change-up in the high-80's that flashes plus with parachuting action. He'll need to throw strikes in the spring and perform, but if he does, he could be one of the first college arms off the board.

A big, burly righthander with a solid track record as a starter in his two years with Miami (Ohio), the 6-foot-1, 235-pound Bachman reminds some scouts of RHP Trent Palmer from the 2020 draft, who was taken in the third round by the Blue Jays. Bachman fits in the second-to-fourth-round range at the moment and has a trio of pitches that he’s been effective with. He can run his heavy fastball up to 96 mph at his best and he also has a firm, mid-80s slider that he can manipulate with two strikes to add depth and try to induce more whiffs. After that, Bachman has a tumbling changeup in the lower 80s. Bachman throws with a bit of an unconventional arm action that is inverted in the back, and also has a lower, three-quarter arm slot. Over two years as a full-time starter with Miami (Ohio) in 99.1 innings, Bachman has posted a 3.81 ERA with 106 strikeouts (9.6 per nine) and 45 walks (4.1 per nine).

Bachman has three pitches that all are above-average, starting with his plus-plus fastball. He also has a plus slider and flashes an above-average changeup, per MLB Pipeline, who has him ranked 29th on their list.

The Brewers have shown a tendency in three of past four drafts to grab a faller capitalizing with Keston Hiura, Bryce Turang, and Garrett Mitchell. This year however, they could take advantage of a strong college pitching crop and grab a rising player. In a class rife with small school talent, Sam Bachman of Miami (Ohio) could be the first selected after showing a decreased walk rate from his freshman to sophomore campaigns and summer ball. Bachman also hit triple digits in fall ball, and with average command, could see his name rocket up boards if he has a strong spring.
