Billy Beane of the Oakland A's. Hasn't won the World Series, but prefer consistent winning vs Theo Epstein winning it all followed by down periods; not working on a shoestring budget might put him over the top. His previous relationship w Sandy Alderson would make it easier pairing vs the difficulties the same pairing might cause others.
Theo worries me. Both Zach Scott and Jared Porter came out of the Theo "tree". There have been reports of his FO teams having an new world "old boys club" atmosphere to them, which might prove challenging moving forward.
Beane is the guy. He checks all the right boxes. History with the Mets, with Sandy, great baseball track record, etc. Plus, with the turmoil surrounding the A's right now as they struggle to secure a stadium or consider moving as an alternative, it might be the perfect timing for convincing Beane it's his time to move on to a new challenge.
Theo is the "big name", but as the comments above covered (quite well), Billy Beane would be a logical choice. A good follow up question would be who BB picks as his defacto GM?
If for some reason BB wants to stay put, I really like Erik Neander from Tampa.........unfortunately, they gave him the title of POBO so it is unlikely that he would be available and/or TB would let him talk to the Mets.
Not to preach doom and gloom, but I wonder if the Mets will have similar issues to last offseason, trying to attract a "top name" for the POBO spot?
David Stearns would be a very good choice however I would bring someone who had a very high resume in the tampa bay organization, I wanted Bloom when we hired Brody but now he is rebuilding the red sox. I would bring him in for sure but teams who have done great work in small markets should be able to do it with money too. target Tampa bay, Atlanta, Cleveland, and astros execs
I am going to throw in an out-of-the-box name. Someone who has worked for Alderson and the Mets in the past, as well as with Billy Beane in Oakland. He no longer works in MLB at all, so he's not tied to an MLB team. He may be tied to another pro team, though.

I would be really interested to learn why Mike Hill did not make the cut last year.

Who's the mystery man? Paul DePodesta.
