I watched this press conference and came away feeling good about the long term play. The "top down" approach that Eppler discussed is an indication that they are going to work from a solid strategy. That's what you need to build a solid team that contends every year. He also alluded to the fact that Steve Cohen is willing to spend to deliver on that strategy, and from other comments this means not only signing an big money player, but also investing in a strong organization that will develop major league talent from within.
However, get ready fans... a long term strategic approach does not mesh with immediate success. 2022 is not likely going to be our year, as it will take time to move all the chess pieces into place. There have been several articles and comments on this site about shooting for 2023 based upon the maturity of internal talent and other folks coming into the market, and based upon what I heard in this news conference that is a better target.
I just hope the new leadership doesn't abandon the strategic approach under pressure from the vicious media if the 2022 team is languishing at the all-star break.
